A Rebute to Microwaving Your Sponges

January 31st, 2007 · No Comments

This is a hoot - I guess I am not the only one reading about microwaving your sponges these days. Professor Charles Penn writes for the UK’s Daily Mail about how microwaving your sponge is a ridiculous waste of time:

it’s a waste of time and we should stop being so obsessive about cleanliness.

As you go on reading, apparently the professor seems to think that we are microwaving those sponges because we think that will make them into germ killing devices. Not so, we are microwaving them as an alternative to washing them in the dishwasher so the heat will kill the germs IN the sponge. If he thinks germs aren’t living in those nasty kitchen sponges, well - he needs to think again. I disagree with lots of things in this article, but he does at least make the point that all of these antibacterial cleaners are making bacteria more resistant. Anyway, give the prof. a read, and tell me what you think. And just throw away those sponges and go to dishrags that you can just wash and be done with it. Sponges are 10 kinds of disgusting. And please don’t quit cleaning your house. :)
