All antibacterial soaps are NOT the same

NORCROSS, Ga., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ — Recent media reports that use of antibacterial soaps may be ineffective in fighting illness fail to differentiatebetween consumer antibacterial soaps and medical market antibacterialsoaps (those used in hospitals and medical settings). “Antibacterial soaps referred to in these news articles do not equate to antibacterialsand antiseptics being used in medical settings,” explained Carolyn Twomey, RN, Director of Clinical Affairs, Regent Medical. “The purchase and use of antibacterial soaps from the grocery store is far different from the purchase and use of scrub and prep solutions — those containing chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), hexachlorophene, alcohols, povidine iodine, PCMX or combinations thereof, in medical settings. Not only are the points of purchase and use different, the applications listed on the labels, activeingredients, spectrum of kill, efficacy and concentration of active ingredientsare different,” Twomey added. Among the applications listed on thelabels of antibacterial soaps used in medical settings are surgical scrub, surgical prep, general wound and skin cleanser and personnel hand wash or rub. Twomey recommends that healthcare workers should always wash or clean theirhands with a product that provides residual kill because these products cancontinue to provide protection long after the healthcare worker finishes using the product. “Health care workers should continue to use antibacterial/antiseptic soaps that have a residual kill because of the pathogens that existin the healthcare environment,” she explained. “There are times whenconsumers may need more than a ‘regular’ soap, such as when family members areimmunocompromised,” Twomey added. “Regent Medical has tested HIBICLENS against strains of MRSA, in-vivo, andresults indicate that Hibiclens is effective against those ATCC acquired andcommunity acquired MRSA strains tested,” Twomey said. HIBICLENS contains fourpercent CHG, providing persistent antimicrobial action while preventing skininfection and cross-contamination.”
