If you need a simple resolution for 2006, here’s a suggestion: Get in the hand-washing habit. It’s the most important thing you can do to avoid infection.

Today it is better advice than ever, as more bacteria become resistant to antibiotics. Caprisa Mabie, a registered nurse and infection control coordinator at Mercy Iowa City, preaches the hand-washing gospel every day.

“Your skin is a wonderful barrier to infection,” she says, “but you have to take care to keep it clean.”
