“We’re seeing an emergence or reappearance in people that are not considered at risk,†Abercrombie said. “The problem is its antibiotic resistance and that many people — mostly adults — are having such severe skin infections that they must be taken to the hospital or have areas of their tissue that die and have to be removed.â€
MRSA infections are more commonly seen in hospitals and healthcare facilities among people with weakened immune systems. However, it is now being diagnosed among healthy adults and children in the community, particularly infecting those interacting in group activities such as athletic teams.
The staph bacteria can kill soft tissue, requiring surgical removal. It can also spread to the bloodstream, which can result in death, if left untreated.
