Battling MRSA in Sangamon County

July 7th, 2006 · No Comments

Sangamon County officials may have to face a large medical bill now that a jail inmate has had surgery to remove an infected abscess in his neck.

The county doesn’t know how much the final bill might be, but the cost of postoperative antibiotics alone could be more than 15 thousand dollars if the county doesn’t get a special rate.

Oh, I have some idea of what the bill could be - our little neck abscess cost us a cool $320,000 in hospital bills alone. Around another $100,000 in doctor fees, and an easy $15,000 in drugs. All well worth it to be able to have my husband with me today. It would be much easier and cheaper to actually spend that money trying to prevent infections in their prison though, don’t ya think?

But I’m sure they will get a bargain rate from the big hospitals. I just hope the patient will be ok.
