Canada to Begin Reporting MRSA Infections

March 13th, 2007 · 5 Comments

canada-hospitals-report-infectionThis is great news for Canada - I sure hope the U.S. will follow suit.

Starting in January, 2008, the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation will compel virtually all acute-care hospitals — in addition to those nursing homes and other institutions seeking a stamp of approval — to provide the rates of methicillen-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or Clostrodium difficile (C. difficile).

Infection rates will be required in order to be accredited, a designation that is voluntary, but that almost all health care facilities in Canada seek. How wonderful that Canadians will do this voluntarily rather than waiting and being forced by government to do it.

My former husband died of a bacterial staph infection with (MSOS) multi-system organ shutdown after minor surgery in a prominent hospital. Unfortunately, after four trips to the hospital it went diagnosed.
After four years (I cleaned up after he lost all fluids in our home) I am still prone to bacterial infections - from ecoli (in urine) to today diagnosed as Klebsiella Pheumoniae. I don’t understand exactly what it is or how you get it. Any advice?

I had a type-o. It went un-diagnosed in the hospital after four trips. They said he had a pulled muscle in his back. He was in shock the following morning - unresponsive.

Hi Deborah - I am so sorry for you - you must have been through a nightmare. I really suggest you read up everything you can get your hands on, and pay special attention to immunity. It sounds like to me that your system could be weakened, leaving you susceptable to these organisms that are around you. Take good care of yourself!

My 85 year old mother has MRSA and has been living at home with my father - it doesn’t seem to become an issue unless she goes into a hospital, her immune system is down etc. She gets tested for a while when she comes out of a hosptial situation and they just stop coming - don’t know what that means. Upshot is that she has requested that she now be put in a nursing home and we wonder what that will mean if she has the MRSA - will they take her and put her isloation?
