Interestingly enough, I recently had a great conversation with another blogger (during a blogger meetup while I was in Toronto last week) about LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) surgery - this is the laser surgery that is so popular now for vision correction. This is something that I have been hesitant about [...]

All About Biofilms
March 29th, 2007 · 2 Comments
In the study of MRSA, the word biofilm comes up a lot. This is the problem with the plumbed pedicure units - a biofilm forms on the pipes. Have you ever had to replace the plumbing under your kitchen sink? Surely I am not the only one. The disgusting stuff [...]

March 7th, 2007 · No Comments
I am a sucky blogger, I know. I hate it when I get lazy (or in this case overwhelmed) and wind up missing important information! But, just in case it still may help someone, here is some information about a recall of frozen desserts that were contaminated with Staphlococcus bacteria, from late last week:
The Canadian [...]

You never think you are going to be in an emergency - we all know we should be prepared, but are you? During the nightmare that was Hurricane Katrina a couple of years ago, we had all manners of people having to walk for their lives chest deep in filthy bacteria-laden waters. What [...]

One hospital in the UK is using sterile honey and seaweed to prevent MRSA infections in wounds. The honey is directly applied to the wound to seal it, and the seaweed solution is in the dressings and is purported to pull the infection away from the wound.
Doctors at the James Cook University Hospital in [...]
