This article on cellulitis at Yahoo! Kids Health is a good general reference. Basically, cellulitis is a bacterial infection that has entered the body through a break in the skin. The symptoms are a painful area of inflammation on the skin, with redness and is warm to the touch. As the infection grows, you can get a fever and chills and swollen lymph glands.
As you can guess, one of the many types of bacteria that can cause cellulitis is Staphylococcus, but there are many other bacteria as well that can cause it. If you have an infection like this, please do see your doctor, and consider having your wound cultured so that you will know what you are dealing with and can get the proper treatment. Cellulitis can sometimes be caused by bacteremia (an infection of the bloodstream), and vice versa, so if your doctor wants to check your blood for bacteria, this is why.
