I am not sure why cleanliness in hospitals is such an issue, but it sure is - both here in the United States and abroad. I imagine this is something that has been taken for granted for a long time. While hospitals cannot cut corners in many areas, unfortunately cleanliness is one where they can, and have, and it is now coming back to slap them in the face. Competition between hospitals is almost nonexistant, but may be a really good solution to the terrible problem that hospitals are having with MRSA. You can read about what is going on in the UK to further this idea at the Times Online.
