Family Battles MRSA, Needs Your Suggestions

October 17th, 2006 · 51 Comments

I get letters like this every single day. Not quite as bad as this one every day, but sometimes worse and even more heartbreaking. I often don’t know what to tell these people who are suffering so, and having a hard time getting the proper response from their medical team. So, this one I am offering to you, and maybe you have some suggestions for this family:

Hello , my name is Susan (name changed), We have been battling MRSA for over a year. 3 out of 5 of us has had a bought with this. My husband andmMy two daughters all have a terrible repercutions with this break out. We have gotten to the point where Doctors have not given us much hope. We even have Doctered at the University of Minnesota of which are the best of the best. Sadly they to me have not helped and given us other options.

My daughter who is 14 is the carrier. Has been treated with vancomyocin as the last alterantive. Now is vancomyocin resistant.

Another daughter who is 4 is not the carrier but has had the worst break outs at one time she has had over 150 boils on her little body all of which were mrsa. Now is vancomycin resistant. She is the one who has suffered greatly with other medical issues also.

My husband who is 34 has had boughts of mrsa of which he needed to be hospitolized for.

Myself and our son has not had any break outs. No one can explain why we dont have the break out. We have a allergist that would like to see us have some blood tests to find out why we dont get the break out.

I am writing you this because I feel no one wants to help us anymore. Can you give us some help.

Technorati ,

Hi i read the note you left about your family. i was doing some research for work and came across a web site called netdoctor.co.uk they were talking about a trial drug being used in the uk to treat mrsa that is resistant to vancomycin. it might be worth it to check it out.

Mrsa has also plaqued my family for the last year also.

I have 5 children one with Cystic Fibrosis.
mrsa was first brought in to our home a year ago when my oldest son contracted it. He is a football player and we live in florida so he also occasionally goes deep sea fishing. we are not sure if his exposure was from the Football locker room or from chumming for sharks in a shark tournament.

At any rate the mrsa got into his bone on his finger and he had the tip of the bone on his finger removed. Since then he has had mrsa 3 other times.

My daughter with CF had to get a feeding tube and she too had mrsa in her feeding tube boils on her body and has tested positive for mrsa in her lungs. Her lung function has greatly decreased in the past year and we are going in to the hospital tomorrow for a 7 to 14 day stay for IV antibiotics (know as a tune up for cfers) to try and get rid of it.

My second oldest son has also had it once my husband and I have both had it twice and my 4 year old daughter contracted it once. There is only one member of our family who has never gotten it. i am wondering after reading thios letter if he may be a carrier.

Mrsa is so very painful having experienced it myself and also having a 4 year old daughter I have watched suffer from it my heart goes`out to this family in the letter. i am so sorry for you this is a terrible horrible bug and i will add you to my prayers. i can not even image the heart break of a mother watching your daughters suffer from this.

Our family has finally been refered to an infectious disease doctor we are hoping can help us rid this from our home. We moved last month and threw away most of our bedding rugs pillows etc. but much to our horror it did not work and we have experienced 4 outbreaks of mrsa in our new home in the past month.

I have been reading on the internet about success with natural oils and clay and changing ph balances that have shown progress. i have seen mention of people who have found help using tumeric, garlic and tea tree oils like melaluca. also they say using borax in your laundry will kill mrsa as the water in washers these days is not hot enough to kill it. I guess it is definitely worth a try.

Also They found a volcanic clay in France that has killed the MRSA bug in some clinical trials. I am thinking that this only would make sense and if we do not find relief soon moving to France if we could afford it would be worth it to get rid of this.

I do not know of many of the new products that have seemed to pop up on the internet actually work or are just feeding on our terror of this disease for proffit. It is hard to know what to do when your family is suffering and our doctors say it is everywhere and there is nothing we can do.

Well i have learned more online in the past few days than I have from any doctor about tips to help stop this bug from real people who have actually gotten rid of it for good. So if there is anyone out there who has fought the battle of the superbug in there family and won please let us know.

Desperatley seeking anyone with first hand experience of success

I have been battling MRSA almost 2 years. Everyone in our family of 5 has had an outbreak.
We were without any symptoms for several month thinking we had beat it, and now here it is again. My husband was hospitalized for a week and had surgery to remove the dead tissue from his leg. The rest of us are left with scars.
Thank you for your comments on this site. I am going to make some calls and demand we get tested to see who the carrier is and what some other options are.

    hi,
just wanted to update everyone about what I have learned about MRSA. We just got out of the hospital with my daughter who has CF she was on IV antibiotics for 12 days. I can’t say for sure that the decline in her lung function was due to Mrsa in her lungs but she did test positive for it once and i think it was a big factor. She is doing better and her lung functions are back up. We are grateful to be home and for the moment all MRSA free.

Now for what my experience in the hospital taught me about MRSA. i asked every doctor and every nurse who entered our room about it. most of them knew very little.

The infectious disease doctor was not a great help. he said he saw 10 to 15 cases of MRSA a week and for the most part was unsuccessful in totally irradicating it. I have to say his hopeless outluck that there is nothing you can do made me cry as i was sure he could help.

I think the medical community s a whole is taking it way too lightly and yes the day is coming soon when the problem will get much much worse. Unless something is drastically done to find a cure and stop telling everyone it is no big deal and it is everywhere there is nothing you can do.

So, i do not accept that WE can not get rid of this!! i have been reading everything I can find here is what I have done and today we do not have mrsa I will post again if this does not work and it comes back.

I read about the ph balance of Mrsa and it being able to live in acidic solutions and not basic. Borax in your laundry because it is basic is supposed to kill it on your clothes.

    baking soda in your bath

I also found posts online about reading the back of the cleaners you are using mrsa is resistant to ammonia cleaners and clorox wipes do not kill it which is what we were using. what does kill it? Mr. Clean multi surface. or a bleach and water mixture. since we have asthma and CF in my house we can’t tolerate bleach so - i had a team of friends and family come over we put on masks and gloves and cleaned every door knob, light switch, gaming equipment, any hard surface. We also used lysol spary . Now lysol does not state anywhere that it actually kills mrsa just staff so i am not sure about this one thier web site is sketchy as it gives you info on MRSA but never says on anything it actually kills it. also with MR. Clean multi surface you have to leave it on the surface for 10min before wiping.

Now for the most important part. About being a mrsa carrier. If you work in the hospital they do nose swabs on you to test for mrsa befor you can enter the ICU without a mask. If you test positive you have to put BACTRABAN ointment in your nose two to three times a day for 5 days to get rid of the MRSA. If you ever had mrsa in your sinuses or just in your family there is a 99% chance someone carries it in thier nose. this is called being colonized with Mrsa. All 7 of us are now using this. I was told by one of my daughters CF doctors about this. He said we all had to do it at the same time. You can only get bactroban with a perscription. So ask your doctor about this. We had one pediatrician who said this didn’t work. if that is so then why do all the doctors and nurses use it ?

I also found a guy on the web named Ted he is a scientist doing his own research on MRSA he lives in bangladesh I think. Anyway he lists several solutions to aply to the boils and to clean with like baking soda, peroxide and iodine mixtures. There are also posts about many people who have been helped with taking the spice tumeric. I would not believe it if there were not at least 10 people every month who posted success about drinking a tabelspoon of tumeric in a tea 3 times a day. I tried it when I got a mrsa spot and it seemed to help but the taste is hard to take. I have been adding it to our foods though. if you search i am sure you can find the site.

I hope this helps others. although we are doing all these things I do not know yet if it will work. We are Mrsa free for 1 week so far and are keeping our fingers crossed.

One doctor a relative told me that you can not get rid of the bug but you can build up your body by eating right and taking vitamins, minerals and probiotics and excersise so that you can become resistant to its effects. I think that is the best advice i have gotten and we are trying to follow it.

There is lots out there on probiotics, the good bacteria in your body. bacterias can not grow on top of other bacterias. So, if you have the good bacteria the bad can’t grow. Unfortunately antibiotics kill both so it leaves room for the bad to flourish. i even read about one study where they had the nurses at a hospital dip thier hands in yogurt after using antibacterial to clean so it would replace the good bacteria. they said it decreased MRSA break outs. We haven’t done this yet. but it does make sense. We are taking probiotics daily. Vitamins and minerals.

good luck to all who are like us fighting this bug
please post anything you might learn about getting rid of it.

My family has also been battling with mrsa for the last year. Three out of four of us have had it. My three year old son was the first to get a boil on his belly. I believe it came from daycare. Next was my husband, who has had them all over his butt. It seems to have decreased for both of them. But, now I seem to be getting it constantly. Last week I had four boils on my rear end. They have healed and this week I have five new ones. I just can’t win. We have terrible, ugly scars from these things.

Thank you Laurie for the tips. I will try anything! Some things that I have already tried and have NOT worked include: bleaching every hard surface possible in my home, door knobs, light switches, kitchen chairs, razors, shampoo & conditioner bottles etc., washing my bedding daily, showering twice a day, literally scrubbing my home from top to bottom! We also used the Bactroban! This did not work. In fact, my son & I both broke out with new boils about three days after we started using it! At the same time we were using Hibiclense to wash our bodies.

The best thing that I have found so far is to use a Q-Tip dipped in bleach & apply it directly to the boil! It won’t start working until the boil has started to drain and there is an opening for the bleach to get through the skin. It burns. I tell myself, once I feel the burn that means it’s working. It usually starts to dry up and goes away in a couple of days. But, normally I only get one or two at a time. Having five right now, and four last week, I am afraid that I will need to get on antibiotics again. When we first had mrsa and found out what it was, the dr. gave us Bactrim. It cleared up, but about a month later it was back, so I have avoided asking for it again since it seems to only be a short term solution. Also, I really don’t want to be taking antibiotics constantly, since this is how mrsa happened in the first place…..overuse & improper use of antibiotics.

I have also heard about the Turmeric. I did buy some too, but just couldn’t get it down. So, I bought it in a capsule form. I have to admit though, that I haven’t been taking it because I’ve been skeptical about it actually working. But, I will give it a faithful try again & let you all know what happens. I will also be buying some Borax and instead of taking bleach baths, I will try the baking soda. The yogurt makes so much sense! You’re right that bacteria cannot grow on top of bacteria! Maybe all my bleach has just made it worse!

  • Laurie // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:03 pm

    Jenny,

The Tumeric does work. As well as magneisium to establish a normal PH balance in your body. I saw that you were using bleach. That did not work for us. We used bleach to clean and bleach baths did not work. If you have a break out that you can not clear up with natural cures immediately I would not recommend going too long without getting antibiotics. MRSA is dangerous and can spread all over your body even internally. So, sometimes antibiotics are a necessary evil. I have to say that we are still Mrsa free today. I have gotten one spot and I immediately stepped up on the tumeric and magnesium and it was gone in 3 to 4 days. i did keep it covered with a bandaide at all times so as not to spread it to anyone. we have hand gel and antibacterial soap at every sink.

    Ok the nitty gritty
borax in the laundry every wash.
    magnesium — natural Calm http://www.petergillham.com
probiotics by renew life at first we took ultimate flora 50 billion cultures critical care and we have just ordered the maintenence version from our pharmicist. They also have a chewable for younger children.

We are also taking multi vitamins daily
using lysol spray and mr clean multi surface to clean everything.

We have purchased air filters - we have one very expensive one that states it kills MRSA - fresh air by ecoquest. it also has a feature where it can oxidize or ionize and kill every bacteria in your house but you can not be there. not sure about this. But you can look it up online. We also have the honeywell hepa filter which I love you can get it at target.com it is much cheaper but only does one room the other filter is supposed to clean up to 3,000 squrae feet.

We also did the bactroban in the nose for 5 days the whole family. The pharmacy can also mix a nose spay with bactroban but i did not find this out till after we were done.

Tumeric in tea tastes horrible but I have been adding it to food which is great. Chicken salad or egg salad with a huge dose of tumeric is fabulous. I put it on every meat I bake. roast, steak, chicken or fish. also great in home made soup.

This is our first full month without having to go on antibiotics.

good luck to everyone figting MRSA I hope this helps. I have gotten many emails about purchasing information on how to get rid of MRSA shame on you for trying to make a profit on families who are suffering.

I hope this information is helpful and I will continue to post updates on what is working and not working for our family. We live in an area where I am told that 68% of the people in the population are carriers of Mrsa. We are lucky right now that we seem to have temporarily taken care of our problem.

I am not niave. I know that no matter what we do it may return. So please keep posting updates. I know there are many families out there who are battling this and if we all share information we have a better chance of winning the battles in our homes against MRSA.

Thank you and good luck to you all

My family has been battling MRSA for over 2 years. Without getting into the long story everyone in my family has had an MRSA infection. My husband had severe double pnuemonia and was not expected to live. He was treated with vancomyocin and was released from the hospital after 50 days. Thankfully since then he has not had a recurrence.

My children 4 and 7 both have had a couple of boils, which were later diagnosed as MRSA. I have had a significant amount of boils that were also MRSA.

I had heard about tumeric and tried the spice as a tea. It was disgusting and I stopped drinking it. I did not think it would work. In November 2 boils appeared. I went to the store and got 500 milligrams capsules of tumeric. Within 24 hours one boil popped and the second boil stopped hurting. Within a week both were gone without a scar. I take a multi supplement now that has 100 miligrams of tumeric and when I have any type of growth I take 500 miligrams until the growth is gone. This is the longest I have gone without a painful episode in years.

I don’t know if it is coincidence, but I am sure the tumeric has helped me.

By the way an acquaintence told me about tumeric and hasn’t had an outbreak in 2 years. It worth a try.

I got my first boil after Christmas helping a friend install my new furnace. The next day I got a boil which I thought was a spider-bite due to me working in the basement, lots of webs and I saw spiders. Got the boil lanced at the ER he gave me an antibiotic, I forgot which one. After a week the Boil went away, then another popped up. It wasn’t as big or painful, so I just lived with it while it was draining all over my underwear, not knowing what it was. It healed. And another popped up. I started to get a little frustrated and this one got infected, so I went back to the ER and got it lanced, this time the Dr. said that’s MRSA on your leg. I’m going to culture it, but I’ve been seeing this for the last year and that’s it. He gave me Bactrim for 10 days, the Bactrim made my eyes yellow-reddish and I caught a fever. But I got over that, and finised my 10 day supply. 4 days later got another boil with 3 little ones that surround it. Now I’m really getting mad.. I had a scheduled appointment with a dermitologist before we knew it was MRSA. She gave me Doxycyline 100mg for 30 days, bactroban for the nose and under the fingernails, and ordered me to take bleach baths ( 1/4 to 1/2 cup per half bath tub full) every other day. 3 days a week for 30 days. I also was reading about how Turmeric (the Spice or root) has helped people in India with MRSA. So I’m taking that too. I bought a large bottle of it at GNC taking it 3 times a day. It’s been 3 days, and the boil is not as painful and the little ones did not flare up. I’m 40 years old who is very active, runner, weights, outdoor activities and this infection has turned me into a recluse due to the pain. I’m thankful my kids and wife don’t have it. I’m taking every precaution, using a separate bathroom, washing my clothes separate, spraying lysol after I used toilet, disinfecting wipes after using the computer, or TV remote, PS2 games etc.. Constant hand washing. I pray this will be the cure… I hope this helps anyone out there, you’re not alone. I’ll write back in a couple of months to hopefully say I’m cured.

My husband and daughter have struggled with MRSA a few times. For them it has just been a few boils. Very painful though.

At my husbands last doctors appointment for MRSA he was given antibiotics. The doctor suggested the bleach bath 2-3 times per week for 30 days. After the 30 days he was told to take bleach baths 2 times per month for 6 months. The doctor said this bathing regiment should kill the MRSA completely. He is still in the 30 day process of bathing, so we can’t say that this has worked but did feel this information was good enough to pass on, especially if you have had some temporary relieve with the bleach bath.

Blessings to everyone who has contacted MRSA

Hi, I was just reading the stories here and my heart goes out to each and everyone of you. In Feb 2007 my son contracted community MRSA. Up to this day we still have no idea how he got it. No other family members where infected.
His MRSA was a very severe case that got into the blood stream. He was diognosed with septic arthytis in both knees,4 ulcers, and an abcesse on the right side of his lung. The doctors began treatment with Zyvox. My son had a total of 4 surgeries, 1 on his right lug and 3 on both knees along with tubes to drain the infection. This was all done within the first week in ICU. At this point we where not sure if he would make it.
By week 2 his blood labs come back negitive of MRSA, by week 3 he was coming home with a pick line that stayed in for 2 weeks.
It’s been a year & a half now with no complications.
I want to thank all the doctors & nurses to help make this possible.
I’m writing this letter along with prayers to let others know there is hope.

After reading this, string of post, my heart hurts and I am torn between what I know works and how to explain it without sounding like a snake oil salesmen. ASU is doing research on how minerals/clays kills bateria, mrsa e-coli-c-diff one of the clays being tested is from our company. We have used this clay in humans and animals for over twenty years. Our site is http://www.miraclay.com I am not your normal alt health nut, I am an RN with direct mrsa pt care experince. I know about proper handwashing. This post is fyi not a sales pitch.

  • dave // Jul 12, 2008 at 1:32 am

i went through 2 courses of antibiotics nasal gel and pills. I was tested mrsa positive. Came up negative on the next test. 2 weeks latter a small boil resurfaced on my arm. I used anti- microbial silver gel from” ” V S store. I week later it completely healed. 1 month later no outbreaks. This stuff works fast. I also started using colloidal silver in a nasal spray as a preventative. Turmeric and allicin are also part of my regimen. Please try the silver gel its the most effective thing so far

I have been battling MRSA for almost a year now. I’ve probably had 200+ skin infections. I lost count a long time ago. The worst abscess was on my stomach. The hole was large enough to fit a golf ball in.

I’ve taken bactrim twice, been hospitalized with vancomycin in an IV, and had bactriban for my nose. I’ve cleaned my house from top to bottom multiple times. Nothing seems to get rid of the bug.

The antibiotics have given me a systemic yeast infection. This is a yeast infection that starts in the intestines, goes through the blood, and comes out in your skin. Let me just say that yeast and MRSA are a deadly combination. For example… a yeast infection in the armpits weakens the skin and allows the MRSA to attack. I had up to 10 lumps in each armpit at once at one time. There were also many other complications.

I have learned ways to prevent MRSA infections. I have used turmeric. I mix 1 tablespoon in warm water and down it. Then I chase it with another drink or gum to get rid of the taste. It is awful. Some people put it in chocolate milk with hides the taste pretty well. It will prevent the infection from spreading and stop fever. It helps with pain also. I have also noticed that it makes an abscess open up and drain more quickly.

I have started eating homemade yogurt. Homemade yogurt has somewhere around 700 billion bacterium per serving. That’s way more than store bought yogurt or pills. It has cured my systemic yeast infection. I also notice that I don’t get MRSA pimples or abscess for like 3-5 days after eating a serving. It boosts your immune system.

I have also found that exercising helps with MRSA. I know when you are in severe pain with a huge abscess that is oozing the last thing you wanna do it exercise. But it really helps. I had an abscess on my face. I did not excercise and it took weeks to drain and heal. Now I’m left with a horrible scar. I got a second one near the same spot. I lifted weights. I mean big time work out to where I was sore for two days. The abscess did not drain and it did not hurt anymore. I tried to squeeze it and all the drainage squeezed out like a super zit and it went away in days. Very little scarring compared to the first one. So exercise to boost your immune system.

I’ve also been taking kelp to boost my thyroid. It really seems to help too.

This bug is spreading to so many people so quickly that it’s hard to imagine a cure for getting rid of it. If you do get rid of it how long before you get it again.

This illness has had me begging God not to let me die. I have suffered. I’ve had to put a positive spin on things to make my life worthwhile again. I’ve looked at it this way… Maybe God gave me MRSA so that I would change my lifestyle. I now eat healthy and exercise like never before. Even though I get skin infections, I’m much healthier than before. I was headed toward high blood pressure, diabetes, hypothyroidism, etc before I changed my lifestyle. If I slack, I get MRSA. What an incentive to continue a healthy lifestyle. Hey, it works for me. But I do with to have a permanent cure.

    Good luck everyone.

Ok everyone after 32 MRSA infections in my family we have stoped it. God answered our prayers so Here it is the main cure Colliodal silver. If you have yeast from all the antibiotics the natural cure for that is Probiotics 50 billion cultures Vaginal support. You can get it online it is put out by renew life. I am going to post what we have done in hopes of helping others. Some of the doctors are amazed and asked for a list of what I was doing. Others don’t believe in natural cures and said the MRSA went away on its own. Now we have had over 32 cases in my family and any of you who have personally suffered from this know that is a crock. So here it is. I hope this helps. I experimented on myself with all these and then my children. It works. I encourage you to research on the web like I have done. There is great help for this curse of MRSA but not from modern medicine. MRSA is the result of that and we have to turn to natural cures to battle it. I could explain to you all the research I’ve done and why this works but that would take a really long time. Many people encouraged me to charge a fee for this information. My fee is if you do this please post your experience here.

    Thank you and Good Luck

We are presently taking sovereign silver – that you can get from a local health food store or pharmacy. We follow the label for dosage. I have learned that there is a stronger pharmacy grade that can only be bought through a doctor’s office or pharmacy. They also have a sterile version made for the nebulizer. I have requested information on this and am waiting as Megan has tested positive for MRSA in the lungs. http://www.natural-immunogenics.com/

Turmeric – Indian spice - in capsule version because you can get so tired of the flavor in food but is great in egg and chicken salad. In my early experimenting I cured myself of MRSA with this alone but it did take a lot lot longer. The sovereign silver works just as well and as fast as the bacterium so the turmeric and silver together are super force.

Natural Calm – This stuff is fabulous my dad who is a radiologist gave it to me helps restore magnesium levels in the body which I have read about lowering the PH etc where MRSA flourishes in our alkaline bodies when we do not eat right and exercise our PH gets off balance. Plus the Raspberry lemonade tastes awesome. Have to say it really does help alleviate stress too.

    http://www.vites.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=68

Probiotics – These have been a life saver. We take them daily and they help Megan’s digestion. I started these because I read that if there is good bacteria present bad bacteria cannot grow this is the good bacteria. They have them for kids adults and critical care. Not to mention the fact that both of us were plagued by yeast infections with every antibiotic we took. I got yeast so bad that it took several of the pills and creams to cure every time. Megan and I both take the Ultimate vaginal flora 50 billion cultures when on antibiotics and have never gotten another yeast infection. She did not even get one when she was on the IV antibiotics in the hospital. http://www.renewlife.com/Probiotics/

BORAX – added to the laundry for cleaning – I have found it at both Publix and target the brand is 20 mule Team Borax

MR Clean Multi Surface for all hard surfaces & bath tubs etc but if you read the directions you have to spray it and let it stand for 8 minutes before wiping to ensure it kills the bacteria.

Baking soda in the bath if bleach is too harsh and we use antibacterial body wash

ECO QUEST air filter. This is the website for the one similar to what we have in my house. It says it kills MRSA on surfaces. All I can say about it is that it definitely helps my asthma. It got dirty and we turned it off for a few days. My whole family was coughing and had asthma flare ups and Megan got MRSA on her skin again. We immediately started the silver and other things listed above and got rid of it. I also cleaned the unit and turned it back on right away. The guy who sold us ours is Don Fowler he is a respiratory therapist and his information is listed below. http://www.thinkoutsideinside.com/

    Don Fowler RRT
    Registered Respiratory Therapist
    donfjr@cox.net

I have to say I am amazed that all this stuff works as well as it does it is awesome and for a family who suffered for almost 2 years battling MRSA with no end in sight it is nothing short of a God sent miracle.

My 19 year old granddaughter has been diagnosed with MRSA yesterday (she had a tattoo which we will all forever regret recently). My daughter had already been treating her sores until lab tests came in to confirm MRSA. She is on Levaquin and daughter is getting nasal spray for total family Bacatrim or something like that. I am just devastated as I am so afraid her young life is ruined. I’m reading that in England Allicin (garlic derivative) is being used with much success. Has anyone had experience with Allicin (key active medicinal constituent in natural garlic). My husband is going to Vitamin World today to pick some up, we pray it will help her immune system.

Michael, thank you kindly for this information re the clays, the first I’d heard of this. I’ve passed it on to my daughter. We are gathering any/all info we can as this is so new to us. Still reeling as to what to do next. Sadly, my hubby and I are staying away from our beloved g’daughter as we both have health issues and are up in years and scared to death of it. So sad.

  • Michael Douglas RN // Aug 16, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Jan google MRSA+Haydel or ASU +MRSA or Shelley Haydel PHD Then read more about how universal precautions can help protect you and your family.

  • Jan // Aug 17, 2008 at 10:32 am

Mike, I appreciate the information and have contacted MiraClays. I’m a bit confused after reading several articles as to whether the clays in the US, Germany or France are the best usage for MRSA. Anything is worth a try. Thank you.

Do any of your suffer from systemic candida? (yeast infections of the skin or other parts of the body) Or colon problems?

I’ve read that some people cannot get rid of MRSA because it can make it’s way into your intestines. If it lives in our noses, drainage could allow it to enter our intestinal tract. If this happens the MRSA attacks the good probiotics in our intestines and allows the yeast to overgrow. Then the yeast and MRSA work together to attack our system.

Once I got MRSA I started getting yeast infections in my armpits, on my stomach, creases of my legs. I got thrush also.

Well there is good news. I started taking a fiber shake that has helped with the yeast and MRSA. I mix 1 teaspoon of bentonite clay, 1 tablespoon of psyllium fiber, 4-6 capsules of a soil based probiotic (this strong stuff kills MRSA and Yeast) in a glass of water. It’s not very pallatable, but it works wonders.

  • Jan // Aug 18, 2008 at 11:52 am

Just wondering if anyone has tried the Manuka honey? Received a message from a gentleman in the UK who has fought MRSA for several years. He tells me that the honey is being used in their hospitals there with success.

  • Laurie // Aug 18, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Try the soveriegn silver I talked about it my post for Mrsa It works miracles and though I am sure the clay is great you can get soverign silver online or at a health food store and start using it right away as well as the tumeric capsules they are in most health food stores .
Also the probiotics for the yeast by renew life they have kept my family Mrsa free and only my daughter who has CF has still had outbreaks but each time we do the soverign silver and she does not need antibiotics. The combination of the 3 have kept us well for some time. i would highly recommend using all 3 products until you can get the clay. I have read about it and it seems to be a great product. I have not used it as the other things I am doing are working so far.
    Good luck

Laurie, thanks so much for the information. My granddaughter has been taking tumeric capsules for a few days, has added Beta Glucan probiotic (is the Beta Glucan what you take or Ultimate Flora)…little confused on the type Probiotic that is best. Also my husband and I have some health issues and we are interested in the probiotics for ourselves. Will get some Sovereign Silver today and take to g’daughter. Thanks so much!

  • simon // Aug 21, 2008 at 9:26 pm

Laurie - what dose of Sovereign Silver are you giving your child? With all these alternative treatments, its such a guessing game for us as to how much to give our toddler…

  • Jan // Aug 22, 2008 at 10:42 am

I purchased anti macrobial silver gel for use on eruptions only, not ingestion. I wasn’t pleased with some of the results of taking it orally and didn’t pursue this for my granddaughter. My g’daughter is doing very well, feeling well finally and has healed nicely. I pray she doesn’t have another outbreak but if so her Mom will be prepared.

  • Sarah // Sep 6, 2008 at 9:55 pm

With hours of reading…you all have given my family and I some options to try! We also a home of 5- 2 diagnosed and all of us being treated with bactoban ( our youngest 7 months)…I will take any advise! I pray that one day we can beat this!

I just read through these posts. Please remember that everything needs investigation. I understand , from speaking with the researcher from Arizona State University that the clays are still being investigated, and are not recommended yet for treatment: the problem is that the clay also contains heavy metals that can be dangerous to your health. “Staphwash”’s main ingredient is bleach, etc….So, don’t spend money unless you do your homework. I have been fighting MRSA for over 3.5 years, and many things seem interesting, but keep looking.

  • Michael Douglas RN // Sep 28, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Lori this is what DR. Haydel told the reporter. Please cont your 5 year battle. This is not a sales pitch. FYI for more open minds. period

Although she’s left with more questions than answers, Haydel said she’s impressed.

“If I take myself out of the science realm, would I use it? Absolutely. If you asked me that four years ago, I probably would have said, ‘I don’t know, I think I’m going to stick with penicillin.’ I’m convinced.”

  • Anthony // Nov 20, 2009 at 12:21 pm

My family of 4 has been battling CMRSA for over two years now. Been to many infectious disease doctors who all admit that they still have a lot to learn about this. That is obvious since each one tends to have different recomendations for us. What we do find common among them is that they tell us this is fundamentally a hygiene issue . So that is my recommendation to you all. Do keep yourselves and your houses as clean as possible, especially the bathroom. Take showers (not baths) daily and use Ajax with bleach to clean your tub at least 2/3 times per week. Use bleach cleaners for the toilets daily. Lately we have been using SARNA antibacterial cleanser and moisturizer with good results. Wash all clothing and especially towels after each use and use the dryer. Until the medical community has more options for us, we all need to focus on prevention by reducing the amount of bacteria we encounter.

  • Laurie // Nov 20, 2009 at 10:55 pm

    Hey Anthony,

You can take a million showers and use bleach daily and pick up MRSA off a shopping cart or when someone sneezes. I can assure you when we battled Mrsa we washed everything after one use. If you are not using bleach or Borax or silver in every wash you will still have MRSA on your clothes. I would suggest borax it is the cheapest most economical way to kill mrsa in the wash. It changes the PH balance as bleach does but unless you have all white laundry bleach really isn’t practical. Taking showers is great but I would suggest trying colliodal silver and turmeric as well as probiotics to rid yourself of it for good. Also cleaning with Mr. Clean multi purpose which is one of the few cleaners that states that it actually kills MRSA - I am a little offended by your statements as I can assure you that with my experience bathing had nothing to do with it!

  • April // Nov 20, 2009 at 11:43 pm

Once you are colonized with MRSA you will always be colonized with MRSA. No amount of bathing, cleaning or washing will change this. The cleanest person in the world would not be able to get rid of MRSA. I do agree that cleanliness does help prevent the spreading of the bacteria to other people though; just not your family. Family members live so closely that spreading MRSA is inevitable. We use the same bathroom, sit on the same furniture, hug and kiss, or sleep in the same bed.

In the past I found boosting my immune system to be my best defense. Eat right and exercise. Eliminate sugar. Take colloidal silver and turmeric. After two years my immune system has adjusted to living with MRSA. I no longer get bad infections or abscesses unless my immune system is down from another illness. If we get the flu then we end up getting a MRSA infection.

  • Agnes // Nov 24, 2009 at 10:42 am

Just thought I’d add, I had a round of MRSA in the under arm (original site) and down my sides/down the arm from the under arm areas on both sides. This is a really difficult area to bandage, regular bandages won’t stick and if they do they end up getting MRSA under the sticky parts because the skin is now so sensitive. So I have just been catching the oozing in a long sleeve shirt. The sores healed up after I was finally diagnosed correctly (I hope) and prescribed a round of Septra oral + Altabax topical, only to find new ones in the same area started up. I believe that it was the oozing in the area may have been the culprit, because the new sores are in the same area and you can tell that where an existing sore was, the new one popped up where my arm rested against it, or where it had dripped. I called the nurse (I still have not been able to see a doctor) and she put me back on Altabax topical. I’ve been washing clothes and sheets often (and then in the dryer) but found an idea that I think helped, after washing, spray the area of the shirt where the sores are with Lysol and let it dry. Then put the shirt on. I think this helped. Anyway just thought I’d suggest it, I read on the Lysol site that it kills MRSA. I keep reading you must bandage the sores but I’ve tried everything and nothing works in this area so I had to resort to the fresh shirt every day idea.

I’m not at all happy with our health care system, just wanted to add my two cents. We are supposed to have a good health care system in the US? I’m not seeing any signs of it AT ALL. I am supposedly one of the lucky ones to have good medical insurance where I can see any doctor I want without a referral but the problem is nobody will see me, there are waiting lists of two months, and I have not been able to get a doctor to see me besides the first one who misdiagnosed me after not even bothering to take a culture. I finally got a physician’s assistant to see me and the PA is the one who prescribed what I’m on now. Good luck to everyone.

  • Lori // Nov 24, 2009 at 10:55 am

Agnes, if you haven’t had a proper culture of your wound done, you may not be getting the appropriate antibiotic. Ask that PA, or doc to do a proper culture AND sensitivity. You may be getting recurrences if you aren’t on the right antibiotic. I would also suggest laying gauze against your sores, and perhaps use a cut off knee-high nylon to hold the gauze on under your shirt. If your wounds are oozing onto a sleeve , you risk spreading the bacteria anyplace else that the sleeve touches.

  • Lori // Nov 24, 2009 at 10:56 am

April, I know there is a lot of conflict about colonization. However, once colonized, it IS POSSIBLE to become uncolonized.

  • Agnes // Nov 24, 2009 at 11:13 am

Jan, I bought some Manuka honey from an organic foods store and wanted to try it, as I also read people had success with this and also a study supported their findings. I believe you are just supposed to put some on your bandages, from what I have read. The problem I have is that I can’t put bandages on my MRSA-infected area, the tape either won’t stick or if I do get to stick, my skin is so sensitive now that it pulls away a little of the skin and I end up getting MRSA where the tape was. I’ve tried all kinds of bandages and tape. So I’m just using fresh long sleeve shirts over a tank top to cover it. The honey is too sticky to use without a bandage. If anyone has an idea for hard to bandage areas (like the under arms or for very sensitive skin) can you please share. Thank you.

  • Jan V // Nov 24, 2009 at 11:18 am

Just to reiterate as I’ve done earlier. My g’daughter had an ugly case of MRSA..my daughter dressed her leg every night for weeks. Granddaughter took turmeric and later used silver colloidal gel on any new eruptions. She has been MRSA free for over a year now.

  • Agnes // Nov 24, 2009 at 11:23 am

Lori, the PA did take a culture. The sores got better on the treatment, but then new ones popped up in the same area. Just laying the gauze, it won’t stay there but the nylon is an interesting idea, thank you, I will try that. Everything is limited to the upper part of my sides/arms and the oozing doesn’t go through the shirt, and I wear a sweater on top of everything when I go somewhere. I’ve been cleaning everything well with bleach and live alone, doing my best to contain things and no one else I know has it. I haven’t had bad oozing during this second round, the first one where the sores had gotten really bad prior to the proper diagnosis was the worst. The ointment is stopping it in its tracks except for one sore but now that is getting better too, I think spraying the shirt will just help make sure it’s really dead on my clothes.

  • Agnes // Dec 1, 2009 at 11:44 pm

Thought I’d add this, I read on another board an interesting suggestion, it’s so simple yet would work great on those hard to bandage areas/sensitive skin. Put a panty liner (the light day thin pads) with sticky side on the clothing & the pad against the draining area. Jan, I am now using the silver on the new areas and taking tumeric several times a day, thanks for that suggestion. Also am adding a daily Hibiclens bath for 5 days (in the first aid section of the drug store, be careful not to use around the eyes or ears).

  • Agnes // Dec 26, 2009 at 6:43 pm

Update - things have simmered down, no new outbreaks, just flat red blotches where the boils used to be, they are gradually fading.

I learned something new, there have been studies showing that washing with a 60% or greater alcohol-based wash kills more organisms on the skin than Hibiclens. I also read bleach baths were not particularly good for human skin.

What worked the best for me was using alcohol-based hand sanitizer as a wash. It was much more pleasant to use, too (and less things to be careful of/side effects).

I was getting these little pimples on new areas (my upper arms and chest) that I think was not MRSA but perhaps coming from keeping TOO clean. They went away on their own with just a twice daily swipe of the hand sanitizer.

So to add to what everyone said with my own picks of what works:

Personal products: 60% or higher alcohol-based hand sanitizer (used as a wash - I used one with aloe) and silver gel (I found this in CVS and also in a local health food store, but nowhere else) and also tumeric capsules (I used Solgar from the Vitamin Shoppe, this is suitable for vegetarians - common capsules are made of gelatin from cows, pigs, and other animals). Avoid adhesive bandages, use gauze wrapped around smaller areas or for hard to bandage areas, a panty liner stuck to clothes.

Clean the home and linens using bleach-based products, Lysol, and Borax - wash and vacuum everything everywhere as much as possible without going overboard.

As a preventive measure, always wash hands well, particularly when you first come home. Keep nails trimmed. Pay special attention to paper cuts and other small cuts on the hands, put on the silver gel and a bandage right away.

Hope everyone is hanging in there…

You can sleep at night but as soon as you wake up keep washing it every 30 minutes it only took me 3 days by doing it that way. It was so simple BUT IT WORKED, I was so happy now im trying to share it with people to see if it worked for them. Oh when you wash it was it 3 or 4 times each time. I had mrsa bad Im talking about golf ball size elisions spreading evevywhere for year and something as simple as that worked! Hope it works for you

Can you tell me if Tumeric ,Thyme ,Garlic ,can be used as a trement for MRSA in the lungs ,or could you advise me of any other remidies i can try. Jane

  • Butterflymamma // Jan 16, 2010 at 12:57 pm

ALLIMED. If you have MRSA and have not heard about stabilized allicin, please research it. Allimed is a source available in the U.S.
My baby daughter had mrsa starting at one week old. After antibiotics (which only cause the bacteria to burrow into organs), homeopathics, colloidial silver, probiotics and more I stumbled across stabilized allicin which comes from garlic. She is 2 now. We have been using allimed for 3 months and she is mrsa free.

  • Emi // Jan 16, 2010 at 1:16 pm

I have tried a lot of things too as my family of three all have had mrsa for awhile.
I started taking my daughter a new chiropractor who also did a technique called TBM or total body manipulation. I think it basically checks how your body is functioning using simple muscle testing.
He found that my daughter’s mrsa had not cleared up because her body wasn’t recognizing it as even being there. So he connected her awareness to it so her own immune system would start taking care of it. Worked like a miracle!!!
There is a TBM website that lists doctors who practice this technique in each state.

Hello, I was just told that I have MRSA! It started with what I thought was a small mosquito bite under my armpit and then turned into what I thought was a pimple so I started to pop it. Thats when things got nasty!! In that armpit, I blew up and got 5 boils in total and then got one HUGE boil in my right armpit. I have been breastfeeding my newborn daughter the whole time and have stoppped due to the news of me having this bacterial disease. After reading all of your comments I am completely freaking out!! I am sooo scared that my baby is going to get it and I also have a 4 yr old son and am scared that he might get it to. How can I prevent them fro getting contaminated???? I am so scared! My husband had what I think is a boil on his leg but his cured with home care and I had to go thru some very painful hospital procedures!! My husband is from Panama and his mom seems to have some remedies that they use over there that cure boils. I will find out more and keep you all posted.
