Higher Rates Of MRSA Among Drug Users Than Six Years Ago

Current statistics show that there are an estimated 13 million injection drug users worldwide. Past studies indicate that nasal or skin colonization with Staphylococcus aureus occurs at a higher rate in people who abuse drugs and in addition poses an increased risk of subsequent infections in injection drug users.

    My thought is that 6 years ago they weren’t watching for MRSA as much as now a days. Any how, it is obvious why drug users are found more with the this disease, MRSA.

    I don’t feel that doctor’s know as much about MRSA as they should. As far as drug use goes, just think if you are using cocaine and using the same straw as someone who is colonized or if you have Staph on your skin and you share needles, you are cross-contaminating. Not only that, drugs break down your immune system (MRSA’s dream host).We still have a lot to learn,
