15 football players have acquired impetigo, a rash caused by Staphylococcal bacteria – thankfully it is not the antibiotic resistant bacteria (MRSA), but the high school is taking the opportunity to thoroughly santize its athletic areas.
About impetigo:
Impetigo mainly affects infants and children, usually when bacteria enter the skin through cuts or insect bites. But it can also develop in healthy skin.
In adults, impetigo is usually the result of injury to the skin — often by another dermatological condition such as dermatitis.
Impetigo begins as a red sore that quickly ruptures, oozes for a few days, then forms a yellowish-brown crust that looks like honey or brown sugar.
The sores may be itchy but they are not painful. The crust eventually disappears, leaving a red mark that heals without scarring.
The disease is highly contagious, and scratching or touching the sores can spread the infection to other parts of the body and to other people, say experts at the Mayo Clinic. Source
