I frequently hear this question, and my answer is always the same - MRSA is transmitted by skin to skin contact, so certainly sexual activity provides the opportunity. Compounding the issue is the fact that MRSA likes to colonize in those warm, moist nether-regions. The subject comes up even more frequently when considering people who are HIV+, as their immune systems are not up to par, and MRSA has an easy time taking over. Regardless of your HIV status, you need to be cautious.
Here are some results of a study from Clinical Infectious Diseases on three heterosexual couples who evidenced sexual transmission of CA-MRSA. It’s an interesting read if you are concerned about the sexual transmission of MRSA.
Use your common sense - if your partner has boils or wounds of any sort in the genital/perineal region, think twice before going any further. A condom will do nothing to help here. At the very least, a nice romantic shower is in order, both before and afterwards.
