Lake County, Indiana Jail in Quarantine

August 13th, 2006 · 2 Comments

Late last week, Indiana’s Lake County Jail went into quarantine due to an outbreak of MRSA skin infections among its prisoners:

She [Warden Caren Jones] said a number of diseased inmates are being kept together in isolation, and inmates who would normally be transferred to less restrictive housing, such as the work-release center, will be held in the jail.

The medical emergency comes as Jones and County Sheriff Rogelio “Roy” Dominguez have warned that chronic overcrowding in the jail will result in costly problems. Inmate population is well over the design capacity of 1,040. [Source]

In an update over the weekend, the spokesperson for the county police can not comment on whether the inmates are suffering from MRSA or from something else.

Things that make ya go “hmmmmmm.”

i was an inmate in the lake county jail in January of2007. there were some inmates suffering from the same outbreak. but the inmates that i refer to were not in fact quarantined as stated. they were housed with between 8 to 16 other inmates. now how is this safe? even though the inmates incarcerated there have allegedly committed crimes and therefore have been punished that does not mean that their lives should be put in danger by these “sores”. do the officals at the jail have any idea what is causing this outbreak, is it over, and what are the chances that it could and will return
