Looking Back at MRSA in 2006

January 11th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Welcome to another Theme Day at the Science & Health channel at b5media! We have come a good way over the past year in helping make folks aware of MRSA and here is an overview of some of the most influential events of 2006.

January 2006 - ESPN Broadcaster Jack Snow dies from complications from a long term battle with a Staph infection.

February 2006 - The dangers of MRSA and tattooing hits the news. Don’t miss the recent comments from artist Jesse Luna defending his position.

March 2006 - MRSA on Good Morning America, covering the death of Kimberly Jackson, who lost her life due to an MRSA infection acquired from a salon pedicure bath. I have talked about this a lot, being a licensed nail technician myself - and let me reiterate - please do not get a pedicure anywhere they are using plumbed pedicure tubs.

April 2006 - WWE Wrestler Bob Holly suffers a serious MRSA infection, and recovers. Also, another salon-acquired infection stemming from eyebrow waxing.

May 2006 - Men’s Health magazine features MRSA in an article on common biohazards in the home - implicating cell phones as a culprit.

June 2006 - E. Pierce Marshall, 67 yr old stepson of Anna Nicole Smith, dies from MRSA septic shock. Also, employees of a New Jersey jail bring one of the first MRSA lawsuits.

July 2006 - More NJ jail employees jump on the lawsuit, and ABC News does an expose on MRSA in gyms.

August 2006 - MRSA gets lots of mainstream media attention - ABC, New York Times

September 2006 - School has started around the country and already MRSA is a huge problem this year.

October 2006 - The Centers for Disease Control releases new infection control guidelines.

November 2006 - AtomicTumor’s wife, BJ, loses her battle with MRSA. Our hearts are broken and thousands of people’s eyes are opened as to what an infection can cost you. Thank you again, AT, for sharing your story with the world. And hold your loved ones tight.

December 2006 - MRSA hits Brian Russell from the Cleveland Browns NFL team, and ties and other “superflous clothing” are banned from hospitals in the UK.

Thanks for being here with me and reading MRSA Notes over the last year (and a half). I am always happy to share your stories or research any tips you have, please email me anytime at christina@b5media.com. Happy 2007, please keep yourself well and healthy!

I have been researching Mrsa for a shcool project and I have become increasingly interested in this disease. I have been observing your website and I have found everything I am looking for, thank you. Although it would be really wonderful if you could post the U.S. statistics on Mrsa. It would be interesting to see how many people have been diagnosed with this horrible disease.
