MRSA and Silver

June 5th, 2006 · 1 Comment

A question I hear frequently: Why is silver used in bandages now and will that cure my MRSA?

Silver has been used for centuries as an antibacterial and as more antibiotics have been created and have been made accessible to the population, silver has fallen out of favor, as do many old fashioned products and techniques as new technology brings on more modern and supposedly better ways and means. However, with the recent rise in antibiotic resistant infections and the realization that maybe the new stuff just isnt as great as we thought it was, old fashioned silver has come to the forefront again. As I am not a scientist, I cannot accurately tell you what it is about silver that actually kills the bacteria, only that it does, and it has indeed been proven to kill the antibiotic resistant MRSA bacteria, and that it is being used currently in wound dressings and fabrics, to provide a barrier to bacteria and kill any bacteria that may be in the vicinity.

Curad Silver Natural Antibacterial Bandages, Assorted, 20 Bandages (Pack of 6)Most of the major brands now have silver bandages out, but I use Curad Silver Natural Antibacterial Bandages. They are expensive (around $16 US), and I have to wonder if the price is so high because of our perceived notion that silver is expensive, or if the cost of production is really that high. Hopefully that price will go down, because it is ridiculous.

I have been using silver for a few years now, and cleared a very nasty boil (in a delicate spot) in 2 days. All the research I’ve seen indicates an excellent kill rate against staph & e coli bacteria, so why isn’t it being rolled out to help stem this epidemic?
