The Washington Times begins its article about HA-MRSA awareness with a bang:
The family thought about suing the hospital, but Maureen Daly said it was not possible because infection was listed as a risk that the family accepted in authorizing Mrs. Daly’s surgery. It is a common predicament faced by those contemplating litigation.
The Hospital for Joint Diseases did not respond to requests for comment on the Daly case.
I bet they didn’t. You might recognize Maureen as a (very!!) occasional contributor to MRSA Notes, and as a diligent warrior against MRSA and those who are allowing it to continue to spread (see RID). I guess maybe the question is - how do we get rid of that “accepted risk” of surgery? This just isn’t right or ethical for hospitals to write this off as an accepted risk. Sickening - Maureen, thanks to you for all your tireless work.
