This is a story of a woman who acquired MRSA in her C-section wound. Remember these tips when you go into the hospital for any invasive procedure.
I had a baby March 2, 2007. I was is surgery for 3 hours due to excessive bleeding. On March 5th I was released, but the night before that I was have chills and got very sick. I was released but that night I went into emergency (Now it’s March 6th). I had a fever, green fluid leaking from my wound, and a left swollen leg. My ob decided to do nothing and just sent me back home. I layed in bed sick all day, and finally that night I called my ob and told him how high my fever was and how sick I was. He told me that it was because my breast were engorged (I was not breastfeeding). I went to sleep (Now it’s March 7th) I woke up at 3:30 with blood and green fluid all over me and my bed, I screamed for my mom to help and she rushed me to the hospital. My ob came to the ER with the doctor he operated on me with. They opened my wound back up, took a biopsy, and packed it with gauze and admitted me on triple anti-biotics. Later that day tests revealed I had MRSA. I was put in a room by myself, and I was extremely sick. They swiched my anti-biotic to vancomyicin through IV and flagyl by mouth. After a week my temp was still very high, they decided to do x-rays. They found a mass of fluid inside my body (behind my wound). I had a procedure done where they stuck a tube in and removed the fluid, the fluid also turned out to be MRSA. Finally I started getting better. A couple days after I finished my anti-biotics that I was sent home with (zyvox and flagyl) I was back in the emergency room because my mom noticed green in my wound and we could smell an odor coming from it, I was now put on bactrum. My mom had to pack my wound for weeks once I was released from the hospital, so she was put at risk for getting MRSA, and I was told this is something I will now have for the rest of my life. I was also sent to wound care regularly and Infectious Disease as well as appointments with my ob. [source]
She is looking for an attorney to take her case, but most of them won’t touch them, partially because you sign away your rights to litigate for infection by signing a document accepting infection as a known risk when you check in. What can be done about that? No idea here. My mother had a hernia surgery last week, and it just made me ill when the nurse read that to her and made her sign it.

My dad too got MRSA in a hospital in Tucson, Arizona and died 2.5 months later after abdominal surgery. I also would like to sue, because getting an infection postop opposed to getting MRSA is a totally different life-threatening infection. I would like to sue the hospital for poor hygiene, etc and the health care workers not doing protocol hand washing/sanitizing.

Just thought I’d let you all know that you do not HAVE to sign anything. Simply cross out what you do not agree to and then sign it. Just because someone puts something into a contract doesn’t mean you have to accept it. I don’t really go to the hospital but the couple of times I have or even to the doctor I simply cross out what I don’t agree to. It’s simple really.

I have a friend who has resitent mrsa from a past surgery where something was left in her body from the surgery. They tried to drain the wound and they think the infection has become the consistency of jello. We need to find a super specialist asap. She has under gone numerous rounds of vancomycin. Would appreciate any names of specialist.

I just had a son by c-section 4 weeks ago. Before we left the hospital I noticed my son’s left eye was infected, and he had two knots on his head. I told the pediatrician at the hospital and she “assured” me that this was normal. After a few days at home and nothing getting better, only worse I took him to a different pediatrician. She did a culture on his eye and it came back MRSA. For safety precaution she also did a culture on my 14 month old daughter…which also came back possitive for MRSA. Then it was my turn…guess what..positive. Now we’re all off of our medication, but I cant help worrying over every little thing. I now have a UTI and i’m scared to death that it’s caused by MRSA. I dont have any boils or blisters…no fever…but I have a terrible head ache and the UTI. My ob wont even talk to me about it and in fact refused to do the culture in the first place ( my childs pediatrician ended up having to do it.) Please help….any comments or suggestions would be helpful. Also, if you know if I should take any special precautions for disinfecting my house(if necessary) please let me know.

In response to Ashley: MRSA will colonize in you nose and will require you and all family members to use bactroban nasally to eradicate it. But, this is quickly becoming a community acquired organism. In other words, you could reinfect yourself they day you eradicate it. The best of all practices to teach your family is to not pick their nose, or rub their eyes (that’s how you inoculate yourself in the first place with all microbes). Have a tube of bactroban for all cuts in the house. Encourage handwashing - #1 way to prevent infection. Keep nails short. Have sanitizing foam in every room and encourage family members to use. Lastly, remember to keep your immune system strong - eat protein and green vegetables etc., the sick, very young and old are most susceptible. Remember, medicine is a practice - there are many bad and good practioners. It’s impossible to know it all in medicine. Find the doc that fits you (Preferably an infection disease specialist) and never be afraid to get another opinion. - Sincerely, just a wound care nurse

All this really scares me. My Dad died from complications after surgery (thats what they called it) I call it MRSA. Who could believe in a op room my father would get MRSA. Just today my son brought home a letter saying that there are 2 kids in his jr high with Mrsa! What should I do, I need to protect the rest of my family from this deadly infection!

I got MRSA from a c-section, too. It has been a year and a half and my husband, baby, and I cannot get rid of it. We treat it with antibiotics and nose medicine and a few months later it reappears as an abscess on our thighs or butts. It is really scary to think this could affect us the rest of our lives. Will I have to worry every time my daughter gets a scratch?

I had a baby on dec 10,2007 via c-section. After they took my dressing off there was a foul oder and alot of drainage. The hospital nor the doctors did anything about it. They told me it was normal. When I went for my staple removal a week later, my incision came back open. When it did all this nasty looking fluid came out. They put me on antibiotics for a week, and sent nurses out to pack my wound every day. Well here we are in march and I still havent healed. And I just started going to a wound clinic. They cultured it and told me that the infection I have, that has never went away is MRSA. I found out from family friends that was at the hospital, that when they took me into OR the nurses broke sterile field several times. One nurse came out and closed all the doors to the OR with her sterile gown and gloves on and she came right back to my table and kept working without changing them. They never cleaned my stomach before cutting me. I have consulted an attorny and he said that they are responsible because they were neglegent. But it doesnt change the fact that I have to deal with extremly painful dressing changes everyday, or the fact that I have MRSA now.

i had a c-section april 18th 2008 i was o.k untill the 8th day after the surgery i had noticed a red bump on my stomache above the incision by the way the incision was healed and closed anyway after i noticed the red bump the next day my whole stomache was inflamed and painfull i had a high fever so the obgyn opened the incision and some fluid had drained,so i was discharged and told to go and get my packing changed daily the part he had opened was not even an inch, the next day iwas getting the packing changed and the nurse informed me i had an even bigger opening that had to be packed apparently the rest of the incision had bust open because there was so much fluid inside of me as time went on i was put on antibiotics and finshed but realized i was not getting better i was then swabbed at the site of my wound and later found out i have mrsa i was shocked i have not ever heard of this and the only way i figure i got this is by the surgery
MRSA Cured // Jun 3, 2008 at 2:40 pm
I had a C-Section with my daughter on October 11, 2005.. Left the hospital feeling great, only to have a boil underneath the left side of my incision a few days later. I had no job, no money, and no insurance, but I had a strong feeling it was MRSA. I skipped over all the topical creams and after about a week of the oozing, itching, and burning - I sprayed the sucker with regular Lysol - It dried up the very next day!! Have had NO recurrances of it since and I’m now pregnant with my 2nd child due in January and I’ll never forget my Lysol “cure”. I hope this helps someone.

the story above, about the woman with the c-section, i have the SAME exact story…i am thinking about finding an atty as well.

This happened to me too. I had a c-section in 2007, had a very high fever and intense pain in the incision, nothing was done until I collapsed on the 3rd day trying to walk to the bathroom twice. All of my vitals were going crazy and was sent to ICU. It was mrsa in my blood and breast milk. I was put on vanco and other drugs. A week later I ended up have 4 additional surgeries and was put on a wound vac, while still on IV vanco. My baby also ended up with mrsa on his skin and was being treated with iv meds in the NIC unit. When I was released, I went home with the vacuum on and IV meds, luckily my baby came home healthy and remained healthy. After the vacuum, I had to pack myself still on Iv’s and a newborn at home and nurses coming every day. 3 mths later, the same thing happened to me.
MRSA is extremely scary and before it happened to me I never heard of it!

It happened to me too

I had a baby o n September 29, 2007. Everything was fine until about 3 weeks later. My stomach started hurting and I called my boyfriend to come look at it in the bathroom. He said he saw puss like pimples across my incision. I kept saying how it hutt. When we got home, I was going to take a shower. When I went to use the bathroom I felt stuff oozing out of my stomach. I hollored for my boyfriend to come see and he almost passed out. My incision had ruptured open from so much infection. I was rushed to the hospital and they said they had never seen anything like that before. In the ER all the nurses kept asking me who my lawyer was. I had went to my OB twice before complaing of having pain in my incision. My OB never even examined me. I satyed in the hospital two weeks and was sent home on home health for two months. I had to have surgery in the hospital and was left open from my left hip to my right hip to heal from the MRSA infection. This was a nightmare and I had a one month old baby to see about.
Jennifer // Oct 31, 2008 at 2:18 pm
I had run a fever for about 1 to 2 weeks and felt horrible. I went see my OB twice and he did nothing.
Jennifer // Nov 2, 2008 at 11:59 am
Out of curiousity for those moms who have gotten mrsa via c-section. Would you ever think of having another baby? Or have you had another baby and what happened?
I went through the 5 surgeries, rounds of vanco, etc. and my husband wants another baby, I think he is crazy!
Karina // Nov 2, 2008 at 1:49 pm
I developed MRSA after leaving the hospital to give birth to my son via c-section. My son was only a week old when he developed the staph infection on his groin, which eventually turned into MRSA and to any parent, it is frightfully painful to watch your child writhing in pain when the MRSA pustules are being removed/cleaned from him. He developed it on his penis as well and I am horrified at what the future can bring for us both. I have been treated with Vancomycin, and am now on a 3 month treatment of Doryx and constantly have to keep a tube of Mupirocin handy, after having 2 other episodes of this. My son is currently on Clindamycin as he currently has another outbreak.
I need to know if anyone has found some alternative “cure” of sorts for MRSA. Apart from living like a bubble boy, MRSA is ruining how my family and I live our lives.
On the legal standpoint, no lawyer wants to take on our case because apparently, no one has really put a spotlight (aka hefty winning from a lawsuit) on this issue, unless there is a wrongful death suit involved.
For those of you who caught MRSA from a medical facility or hospital, I believe that signing that waiver that no one can really read is simply criminal of the facility to offer, especially when it is nonchalantly given to you with no simple explanation. Liability outranks the proper care and responsibility hospitals are supposed to offer. Find me a regular Joe Schmoe who will question such documents when they are in pain, or agitated, or distracted, or have time to find things to cross out (sorry, that actually is a good idea to do, depending on the severity of your health issue/pain).
I fully believe the hospital was negligent of cleanliness/proper hygiene; I get really angry every time I see anyone in the medical field walking around in public in their scrubs, especially when they should not be doing so. We put our life in their hands and they break their hospital codes every time they do these things. You never know where those scrubs have been when worn in public.
Please let me know if you can recommend any lawyers who have handled such cases, particularly in NY. I would very much appreciate it.
And for those in the medical practice researching more about this and reading this, please help us find a cure for MRSA. Your life and the lives of your loved ones could be affected. Thank you.

Heard of a hand/skin sanitizer that kills MRSA! Germcure.com is selling it, but the site is still under construction. The number is 1-800-germcure.
Hope this helps,

Get Dial Anti bacterial soap ( there is a stronger soap that starts with a C but forgot name.) Also my daughter had staph infection (not sure MRSA) but she was put on a preventative to keep breakouts on face (as she had a swollen lip that was 3x’s normal) called doxycycline for long term, she stopped and started getting boils on legs, so it does help. My sister did get a diagnosis of MRSA but this manifests intself in pink eye, boils, nodgles, lung infections, cysts, my moms face was swollen and her doctor did not diagnosis as MRSA ( but I know it is) they are running Cat Scans and biopsy s so you are blessed to get a correct diagnosis, just stay one step ahead of it. Wash your hands alot and get Lysol spray and wash with bleach and color bleach and use peroxide and I be careful of make-up being contaminated ( you may need all new makeup). Use professional strength antibiotic cream on any sore when it begins. All I can say is that it is a fight and you have to win so wash, clean, and don’t let your guard down. God Bless/In Christ Pam Holloway

One more things there is a new anti biotic called Linezolid or Zyvox that prevents bacteria from making protein, I have read it is being used for MRSA and so far no resistance to it and I think it is not as dangerous as the Vancomyacin. I don’t know of natural cures just keep clean, clean, clean and every sore every pimple needs to be watched. God Bless/In Christ Pam Holloway

Hi,
There is a new product out that kills the MRSA bacteria. They have a foam lotion that you put on your skin & infected area. There is also a hard surface cleaner that deodorizes and disinfects. These products should help clear up infections and help prevent the spreading of infection to others. You can read about and order these products at http://www.Germcure.com
Hope this helps,
Ethan

To Katrina,
Here is part of an interview that Leslie Stall of 60 minutes did
CBS NEWS Nov. 11,2007
Everyone agrees that this is an epidemic. And not only is it an
epidemic. But, it’s an epidemic of our times. It’s here in huge
numbers,” says Dr. Robert Daum, an infectious disease pediatrician at
the University of Chicago Medical Center. The concerns that we have
with schools that are spending inordinate amounts of money trying to
sterilize the school. As soon as the students and the faculty return,
the school is no longer sterile,” Dixon explains.’ We know of a school
in Virginia where the parents asked that the school be disinfected
because they had a case of MRSA,” ”Then every time they had another
case, they wanted the school disinfected again. And they keep doing
that. ‘To think we control community MRSA epidemics by asking people
to wash their hands is foolish. I’m not going to sit here and say
washing your hands is bad. because it’s wonderful. But, it’s not going
to control the community MRSA epidemic” Dr Daum says

“I gave birth to my son in 1/2007 and contracted mrsa in my blood and almost died. My son also contracted mrsa a few days after his birth on his skin. My son and I were in the hospital for a month after his birth. I ended up getting 5 additional surgeries to the c-section. I was on a wound vac and vanco and batriband, minocyclin, batrim…I tried so many drugs and never felt right and the mrsa would always come back, I was on antibiotics and IV’s for 7 months and nothing worked. I was getting so frustrated!
Then, I started looking at natural cures and tried many. Finally, I found something that worked. Acai berry juice, Aloe vera juice and Udo’s Choice probiotics. Take 2 oz Acai berry juice with 1oz aloe juice in the am and then again in the pm. I started out taking 12 probiotics a day 3 in the am, pm, after dinner and before bed. The first few days my body flushed out - try to start doing this on a weekend or when you are not to busy bc you will be in the bathroom for at least a day. Do this regimen for 2 weeks, then lower the juices to 1 oz of each in the am and pm and slowly reduce the probiotics (12 to 11…). If the mrsa comes back add an extra probiotic (11 to 12). After everything I tried this was the only thing that worked for me! It has been a year that I have been doing this regimen, I still drink the juices and I am taking 6 probiotics a day.
Please let me know if this works for you, if you have any questions you can e-mail me at LJ6981@hotmail.com.”

I know I am not an expert on MRSA and feel bad about all the stuff I have read here. My sister had MRSA and my mom is dealing with something that is I think is MRSA (probably got from my sister) My daughter gets boils and infections ( went to emergency to have lanced) her lip was 3 times the size, but they said it was staph, lip happened twice. I just want to say that Jesus heals by his stripes as in Isaiah 53-says and that there is a soap called Ce………? can find at Wallmart and Target but can’t remember name that works good it is spendy ( is not found in normal soap section but ask pharmacy) cepracol or something like that. My eyes got real swollen and I used tea tree oil ( burned alot then a face mask and let is sit until hard then after I washed it off and put bacterban on it and it got better with prayer too, don’t know what it was but I suspect MRSA for about everything since it has been around my family and manifests itself in all kinds of ways, but it worked and now I am fine. God Bless In Christ Pam Holloway

i dont have any experience about MRSA. but, reading on the previous blogs and a research on MRSA, i quiet knowledged how dangerous bacteria it is. all i know is how good the indian treatment is to heal the C section surgeries or the NSVD. the best natural remedy to fight againts any bacteria is “Garlic”. i am quite sure that many of the drug research is going on Garlic to use it as a medicine and i believe there is medicine available to cure MRSA. please refer to your physicist for an opinion on garlic medicine. in future, to prevent your self from bacterial infection post surgery, please add lots of garlic in your food dishes. and a very common advice is to be clean……. .

mrsa cured
what type of lysol did you use and did it sting?
did it ever return
Carolyn Lemcool // Jun 12, 2009 at 9:53 pm
My husband had MRSA in the beginning in the form of one huge absess in the groin area just above the penis. Before cultures came back that it was MRSA he was put on Keflex and continued to get sores all over upper thighs , the scrotum and on his penis. He was not given the vacomycin IV treatment until a year later when it got in his lungs. It has been in his Urinary tract and in his blood. It colonizes in your body and you are never cured. We were given the scrub and nose treatment after the first one but it obviously does not cure someone with a compromised immune system.
MRSA Cured // Jun 12, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Nicola,
I used regular scent Lysol spray and it never returned! It didn’t sting that bad actually. The fluid oozing from the wound helped it not to sting so bad, but once I wiped that off and sprayed it directly into the wound itself, it did sting mildly. It actually felt really good, because the spray was cool going onto an itchy, burning wound.
Carolyn Lemcool // Jun 12, 2009 at 11:00 pm
If you read the directions on your Lysol bottle it says: Hazards to Humans and Domestic Animals. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. You can die from a bad enough MRSA infection but you can also die from chemical poisoning. They give a phone number on their product for you to call . For your own safety call and talk to them before putting Lysol on any type of sore. Even the IV therapy of Vacomyacin is highly dangerous. The Infectious Disease Doctors told me the medicine can be as dangerous as the MRSA. It temporarly shut my husbands kidneys down and he had to have diaylsis. The kidneys did recover. Do not assume you have MRSA unless you have had blood cultures come back saying you do. By colonized I meant it goes in remission and lays dormaint in your body until you may get another serious infection that will bring it out again but not necessarily in just sores. It can get in any part of your body. Do some serious research like I did.
nicola // Jun 15, 2009 at 2:35 pm
