MRSA Inquisition Begins in UK Over Newborns Death

March 13th, 2007 · 1 Comment

This is SUCH a horrible story, and one that probably hits close to home for a lot of us, I know it does for me.

luke-glynis-day-mrsaLittle Luke Day, 36 hours old, died in a UK hospital 2 years ago, and his court case has come up in the UK this week, bringing little Luke back into the news. The question in court was who was responsible for his death. Apparently his symptoms that should have alerted hospital staff, were ignored.

The inquest heard how Luke should have been tested for possible infections after staff noticed that his temperature was low, that he had low blood-sugar levels and he appeared “lethargic and slightly floppy”. Tests later revealed that his blood contained MRSA — methicillin-re-sistant staphylococcus aureus — as well as a less dangerous form of staphylococcus. [source]

I wonder, 2 years later, if little Luke would have gone untreated. 2 years ago, MRSA wasn’t in the forefront like it was - the doctors weren’t watching for it, and we weren’t expecting it.

Some more information about the inquest:

The Guardian

The Telegraph

What do you think - should Luke’s parents receive a big settlement from the hospital?
