MRSA Outbreak in Anniston, Alabama

May 9th, 2006 · 2 Comments

From WIAT TV-42 CBS:

Healthcare workers in Calhoun County are scrambling to find the reason for a staph infection outbreak. Doctors say, the best way to prevent the spread of the possibly fatal infection is a simple every day task.Hospitals and clinics in and around Anniston have been inundated by patients with a potentially deadly skin infection. Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus, or M.R.S.A., has reached almost epidemic numbers in Calhoun County.

Surgeon Dr. George Crawford said, “Here in Calhoun County, I’ve seen more skin infections that are M.R.S.A. than I’ve seen in Atlanta or Houston.”

Crawford also says one thing about the infection that makes it so difficult to treat is that it sometimes is misdiagnosed as insect bites or other skin ailments.

“The presentation is often confused with things like that. The only way to diagnose it is culture some type of material to grow the bacteria,” said Crawford.

I was diagnosed with MRSA on 2/16/08 @ Baton Rouge General Hospital in Baton Rouge, La. after noticing a small raised, hardened area with pain to touch and an elevated temp. I was then admitted to the hospital for 3 days for IV antibiotic therphy . The pain is tremendous. I had a breast reduction 4 months ago in a Hospital, and thats the way I can see where I contracted this staph infection.
