My MRSA Mission

October 5th, 2006 · 2 Comments

This month, our channel-wide theme is the mission statement for our sites . We have a good many different sites in the Science & Health Channel - and I bet you will find as you read through them, most of our missions are pretty different. I could simply say that my mission here is to educate and track the occurrance of MRSA in North America - and that would be correct, but there is so much more. Through writing this site, and the one at MRSA Resources over the past year, I have learned that there are three things that I want to do to help people with MRSA in their lives - that is to make you aware that MRSA is a growing threat, to educate you about MRSA and how to prevent it, and to help support you, the patients with MRSA and your families and loved ones.

When my husband was diagnosed with MRSA 2 years ago this month, we knew what it was - only because we had seen notes come home from school about it. That is a far cry more information than many, many people have when they are first diagnosed with MRSA. Most of them know nothing about it. From my experiences, I quickly figured out that there was a sore lack of resources on the web about MRSA, and in April of the next year, when my husband no longer needed me by his bedside 24/7, I decided I was going to do something about it. We saw more and more young, strong people dying suddenly from this infection and knew that these people needed the information in one concise place that was easy to find. The information I found about the drugs my husband was on were found mostly through cancer and HIV web sites, and there was one web site in the UK that offered a support forum for MRSA patients in the UK, but not too much information about the bacteria itself, so I researched a lot, and met people who had been through MRSA infections and who have been working towards awareness and change themselves, and I put together as much information about MRSA as I could. I also created an MRSA forum, and a superbug wiki in hopes that others would help by adding information that they had discovered. I moved the blog from MRSA Resources to b5media earlier this year in hopes that b5media could help the important topic of MRSA make it to the forefront where it needs to be. I decided to try to make a little bit of money through advertising on my sites in order to help us make a dent in the over $30,000 of hospital bills we were left with after the insurance paid (total bill - about $375,000).

Our family’s battle with MRSA has been a long, and often painful, road - emotionally, physically and financially - but I feel like we came out of it with many good things, and MRSA Notes is one of them. I invite you to let me know what I could do to improve things around here. I know there is a lot I could do, and I have restructured my work schedule a good bit recently (buh bye Brad Pitt, my other high maintenance love…LOL) in hopes that I can make the changes that I know I need to, but I do want to know what you would like to see, so feel free to email me at christina@b5media.com or leave a comment and let me know. If you have found something helpful here, I would love to know that too, it reinforces my knowledge that this work is a worthwhile effort. :)
