Apparently this warning was sent out recently (where, I cannot discern):
“Swimmers beware. As a nurse on the Coast, it has come to my attention there have been several incidents where swimmers in the local rivers have been coming in with staph infections. This is very dangerous due to the lack of rain. There are many bacteria in the local waters. The smallest nick on the body can let these bacteria in and cause serious health problems. If any local official has anymore input on this, please make the public aware to beware of the local waters.”
The Mississippi Department of Health wishes to remind people that Staphylococcus aureus is not a water bourne bacteria and as such will not be found in the water, no matter how low the water is.
“Lack of rain should not have anything to do with staph infections,” said Ocean Springs Hospital infection-control personnel.
