Pennsylvania Hospitals Getting Proactive Against MRSA

February 7th, 2007 · No Comments

State seal of PennsylvaniaOver the last couple of years, Pennsylvania has had a terrible problem with HA-MRSA, as you can see from my archives on MRSA in Pennsylvania. The infection rate has dropped an astonishing 70% since employing more rigid prevention tactics. They are swabbing all patients for MRSA at admission and discharge, and putting those who are positive for MRSA in isolation and taking special care that all staff workers are properly gloved and gowned and that all items used in their care are properly disposed of or disinfected after use. These are standards of care that are necessary, and I am thrilled to see not only that they are being used, but that the results of doing so have been such an improvement. I hope other hospitals are taking note. The CDC says that approximately 17,000 people die in the US from hospital acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA) annually. This is almost completely preventable.
