One of my long time readers, and a phage therapy advocate, sent me the link to this wonderful video about the state of phage therapy, and how it works. Phage therapy was used before the widespread use of antibiotics, and is only practiced in a few clinics in the world, and none in the United States and Canada. Watch it to learn more about the therapy - its advocates really believe it is the key to fighting antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Things are changing in North America with the recent use of phages in our deli meats - maybe, just maybe, it is the start of the FDA considering bringing back the use of phages to treat antibiotic resistant infections in our bodies. This is paragraph 32 of the World Medical Association’s Declaration of Helsinki, which are ethical principals for medical research and care, and something that has been shoved under the rug forgotten in North America with the advent of big pharma:

In the treatment of a patient, where proven prophylactic, diagnostic and therapeutic methods do not exist or have been ineffective, the physician, with informed consent from the patient, must be free to use unproven or new prophylactic, diagnostic and therapeutic measures, if in the physician’s judgement it offers hope of saving life, re-establishing health or alleviating suffering. Where possible, these measures should be made the object of research, designed to evaluate their safety and efficacy. In all cases, new information should be recorded and, where appropriate, published. The other relevant guidelines of this Declaration should be followed.
