Possible MRSA Lesions Appearing on Katrina Relief Workers

January 22nd, 2007 · 6 Comments

mrsa-hurricane-katrinaIt has been a while since we have heard about MRSA in association with Hurricane Katrina, but it is back in the news. Mississippi’s Clarion-Ledger reported over the weekend that some people who have been working in New Orleans during the deadly hurricane have been presenting sores and lesions on their skin believed to be caused by MRSA. These workers are at high risk because they are building and restoring, putting them in situations where they are getting skin abrasions. Be careful out there, stay in tip-top physical condition, and be sure and see your doctor if you get the first sign of infection in a wound.

[…] You never think you are going to be in an emergency - we all know we should be prepared, but are you? During the nightmare that was Hurricane Katrina a couple of years ago, we had all manners of people having to walk for their lives chest deep in filthy bacteria-laden waters. What if this happens to you? What will you do? […]

Interestingly enough, my brother and his friend who work for the federal govt were in New Orleans in July. Since that time, they both have had multiple Staph infections which are all MRSA. The doc’s here continue to cut a bit here and there as new infections appear. What is really going on with all the staph in NO?

I think it has reached Arkansas as well as Oklahoma. I contracted it from a Hospital from unclean hands, and my hometown in Ar. The elementary kids are giving it to others as well as the teachers, back and forth… Where is the funding for the research to save more lives? It is being spent on researching other things. What about this?????? This causes DEATH, where is the responsiblity at in the White House…..

my child is in the process of being treated for her 3rd mrsa infection. i believe she contracted the first one while visiting my father in the nursing home. i have scrubbed and disinfected everything in my house and the infection still comes back. i have two other children who have not become sick. i am at my wits end with this and now all the kids who are dying with this is really making me more worried. i would really like some input on this because my doctor seems to think she is ok…

My fiance and I lived down in Slidell, LA for over a year. He was an officer for the town and was called in for 24 hour active duty to help and rescue victims. Since then he has contracted MRSA. We can’t think of any other way he may have gotten it besides picking it up from the hurricane which took everything. He hasn’t been in a hospital/jail/school since Katrina! Now were investigating our son who is 10 months old and has MRSA. If anyone has information about children being born with the staph infection plz contact us!

I contracted MRSA a few months after returning to the Gulf Coast and nearly lost my life. I truly believe that the fallout from the burning was what got on my skin due to where the lesions appeared!
