Randy Tripp’s battle with MRSA

November 30th, 2005 · 18 Comments

From The Midland Daily News:

It didn’t look like anything serious at first. When 18-year-old RandyTripp noticed a bump on his leg, he thought it might be an ingrownhair. A week later, when it started to get bigger, he showed his mom.
Hesoaked in a hot tub, put on Band-Aids and covered the reddening spotwith antibiotic ointment, but nothing worked. When the lymph nodes nearhis groin became sore and swollen, when his ankle did the same and thelump grew and turned an ugly purple, he knew he had to see a doctor.
”I couldn’t move my leg,” Tripp said. “It felt all cramped up. I couldn’t even get my shoe on.”
The diagnosis: a staph infection referred to as MRSA, for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus. It kept Tripp in the hospital for two days and out of school for a week.

I have a very dear Friend whom I believe has CA-MRSA…please help me find a hospital in Michigan that specializes and can help him…

    Thank You very much
    Lisa

Hi Lisa, there really aren’t hospitals that specialize in MRSA - take him to his general practitioner or the emergency room, and be sure to tell them your suspicions. You can also consult a specialist in Infectious Disease - they will be best trained in MRSA. Good luck!

    April,
I’m also looking for a specialist in NC, or VA, did you get any help? I’m not crazy about Winston-salem hospitals, and Duke is soo far.
Where did you end up going? need help too.

    Hi Tammy,
After battling over a year with CA-MRSA, my doctor finally agreed I needed to be seen by a Infectious Disease Doc. I have a appointment at UNC-CH in June. I am truely scared about how this infection has been attacking my Immune system. After being on over 6 antibiotics and nothing really keeping the MRAS away, hopefully this hospital will tell me something encourageing instead of the same old run around.

    Hi Tammy and April,

I too contracted MRSA in August of 2006. I however did not have any of the symptoms (boils, open wounds)normally associated with MRSA. I live in northern Michigan (Tawas)and the hospitals up here were also unable to diagnose me. After almost two weeks and more then 9 visits to two local hospital emergency rooms. I had begged them to admit me as I felt I was dying- the infection had ravaged my whole body and still I did not meet their criteria to be admitted. I had flu like symptoms persistently high fevers (104-106) severe vomiting and fatigue, an inner ear infection, bronchitis, swollen glands all the way around my neck(front and back)I was dehydrated from not being able to keep anything down my urine was orange and my skin and eyes were yellow due to my kidneys starting to shut down. Still they wouldn’t admit me instead they gave me a I.V and had me come daily to the emergency room ( I had to be drove 40 minutes one way)to infuse me with the “super antibiotic” only to be told after 5 days it wasn’t working and I needed to start coming in twice a day to see if that would work. I new all along it wasn’t working because I was feeling worse every day. I refused to do it I demanded something be done at which they finally did a CAT scan that revealed a massive infection in my mastoid bone (2cm from my brain)at that point I went from not meeting their criteria to them not being “staffed” to handle my condition and was transferred to Hurley Hospital in flint by ambulance. Were I was immediately put in isolation and tested for MRSA which I of course had. It had reached my blood and my condition was severe. I was put on vancomycin 2 infusions daily through a pick line for 18 days straight only to still have to have surgery to remove my mastoid bone because the infection would not go away. During my hospital stay I continued to develop new symptoms face paralysis(both sides)as well as mononucleosis I was being seen by the 2 best infectious disease doctors in Michigan and 6 others. Finally they figured out through a lot of research and and dedication that I was only the 3rd person in the U.S since 1971 to ever have all of these unique symptoms all derived from MRSA. I am otherwise healthy once again thanks to all of them at Hurley. I would recommend both of you contact DR.(OPT DA GOBBER)at Hurley or his associate Dr. Elizabeth Hale (Midland)as they are both experts in their field and have written books in regards to communicable/infectious disease. I was told had I not started treatment when I did an abscess would have developed on my brain an chances are I would not be writing this today. I truly believe neither of you should wait one more day either. April have you been receiving oral antibiotics, because MRSA can only be treated with vancomycin intravenously. I am curious are either of you from the same area as I am? I wish you both the best of luck take care and call today.

The only drs that should be treating anyone with MRSA are Infectious Disease drs.

    Hi Amy,
Yep been on Vancomycin while in the hospital back in September. Two months later I got another boil on my leg. I continue to have boils about every two months apart. Now my 18 year old daughter is having them. I refuse to go to the local hospital again. I have learned from a friend who has a sister that lives in the next county over that the Doctors in Montgomery Co, NC have scheduled her sister for surgery to remove a CA-MRSA boil on her leg. The are planning on cutting the skin away even around the infected area. Talk about an aggressive approach. The Moore County hospital just opens my boils and then sends me home only to return again 2 months later. I am so frustrated. I look forward to seeing the doctors at UNC-CH in June. I will keep the doctors names you mentioned earlier on my need to call list if I feel let down once again in Chapel Hill.

My dad has MRSA and stay in the hospital from July 11, until August 1,. He started in a local hospital and they did surgery on his back because the infection is in his spine. They sent him to Crawford Long in Atlanta where he spent 2 weeks on antibiotics and had all kinds of test run. He is now at home with an I V for his antibiotics and he can’t walk or even roll over. He is bedridden. Has anyone ever heard of this type of paralysis associated with MRSA?

I have had MRSA since April 2007. The first infection was next to my ear on my neck and swelled so severe that the doctors were worried it would travel into my brain and have a brain abcess. I was in the hospital for 4 days . The doctor who found a drug that worked was an infectious disease doctor out of Saint Joseph Mercy Ann arbor. I was at the livingston St. Joseph. They took another culture and grew it to test tons of antibiotics on it to see what they could send me home on that was inexpensive. I was sent home with Bactrim for $4 . I’ve had 5 different infections since and back to the doctor twice. I have another one on my neck very painful as we speak. I don’t have full coverage insurance so I cannot go to the doctor regularly. Is anyone else having these over and over? I’ve been spraying Lysol disinfectant all the time on everything and washing my hands all day long. I believe this is staying in my blood system.

I was allergic to Vancomyocin but they prescribed me at first in the hospital with something that started with a L that cost $3000 a bottle.

Well here I am again with the same ol stuff. Now I have a wound on my stomach. I have been on every medication known to man and tried every precaution doctors have given me. I am pissed off because I feel like I have used as a guinnie pig at the hospital in my area. I wish I could share with you all how expensive my medical bills are and I am still sick. Since I can not afford to go tot he hospital anymore I now cut the knots open my self and drain them. I learned a lot earlire than the doctors that the antibiotics were not working. If anything they made me sicker. Funny now so many people are dieing from MRSA we are seeing this more on the news lately. I emailed the CDC about a year ago and have done so many time and never got back a reply. I am just glad more people are learning abut this infection and how serious it is. Also that I am still alive and able to share with you all.

I went to the ER yesterday for this one on my neck. This time a round of clindomycin 4 times a day for ten days and Bactroban in my nose twice a day and on the infection 4 times a day. My husband and daughter both have to use the Bactroban in their noses as well. I find it crazy also how it is on the news lately all the time and When I first got it no one ever heard of it, it seemed. I spent 200 dollars on scripts yesterday and the ER visit I don’t even want to know.

  • April // Oct 18, 2007 at 5:47 pm

    Hi Carie,
I do not want to sound so negative but I have been on Clindomycin and Bactroban ointment in the nose so many time. This only made my immune system weaker which made me catch so many other infections not to mention yeast infections. The pharmacists at the local drug store finally asked me what was wrong. When I told her she was so surprised to see me up and walking. She said she had just attended a training on MRSA which lead her to believe no antibiotics was better than what the doctor at the ER had me on.
My family doctor finally after a year of having MRSA ASKED ME NOT TO COME BACK TO HIS OFFICE. The only was I got help was to go to the ER. That is why I now have sooooo many bills. I believe the main thing that has helped is to use antibacterial body soap, keep my towels away from my children, and kick the cats out of my house. The doctors at UNC-CH said the two cats I had in my house may be MRSA carriers.

Thanks April for the info. I was wondering as well if my dog could be carrying it. I am hoping this works for me but with much doubt. I understand what your going through and the pain you must have as well. I am embarrassed to tell anyone besides my family. When I was at the ER the other day I was treated like an HIV patient who was bleeding like crazy . No one wanted to touch anything around me. I too don’t have insurance and feel like the ER is the only one to take me serious. Have you seen a infectious disease doc?

I got my first MRSA boil in August of 06. I have had 16 occurences since that time. I usually get them in my armpits, breasts or lip. I was given pencillin based antibiotics when I got my first boil, which only makes things worse. I have been on several antibiotics; bactrim, clindamycn, cipro.. the antiobiotics I was told would take care of things. Nothing has worked. I too, get them about every 2 months like clockwork. Some are worse than others. These doctors have no clue what they are dealing with and I’m getting really scared. I was a completely healthy person until this. I am a Flight Attendant so I believe I picked it up that way. I currently have one inside my nose and it is so painful I can hardly stand it. I just don’t know what to do anymore.
