Lots of personal MRSA stories coming out now, for some reason. This is the story of Roger Jenkins, a wrestling instructor and a candidate for the Canadian Olympic team in 2004. MRSA attacked him 2 weeks prior to the Olympic trials, he has now recovered fully. One particularly interesting part of his story is how he was blamed by his teammates:
“My team members thought I got this bacteria infection from my dog. They put a lot of responsibility on me and thought it was all my fault.”
Jenkins says they swabbed their animals to rule out the possibility that the infection came from them. He later learned the source of the infection.
One month before Jenkins became sick, three of his wrestling partners also had a less serious form of MRSA. Jenkins figures because he was teaching, coaching and training for the Olympic trials, his immune system was run down. As a result, he acquired a more serious infection.
“My coaches accused me of bringing it to practice from the farm…I’m disappointed in the way my teammates handled themselves, in the way my coaches handled themselves. I was disappointed in the amount of people’s arrogance.
I hear so many people talking about this. We went through it as well. Some members of our family said such horrid things about us, I will never forget it, and quite honestly, I have had a very difficult time forgiving them. If you have had the same problems, feel more than free to vent - I sure do sympathize.

I think alot of the way Roger and many others are treated is out of fear and lack of knowledge about MRSA. People are quick to judge before asking. Weve had members on the MRSA forum say their family were keeping their distance, simple precautions is all it takes to keep your loved ones safe. Hang in there everyone!

My feelings at this point are that if you think you don’t want to be around us, then believe me, we don’t want you to be. We are so jaded now. Ugh.
