Staph infection complaints lead to probe at jail

July 7th, 2006 · 5 Comments

Via GreenvilleOnline.com:

Complaints about infections causing open sores among more than 30 prisoners and officers at the Greenville County jail prompted a federal judge to order an inspection by a doctor at the request of two lawyers investigating conditions there.

Prisoners and officers have reported sores on their hands, feet, scalp, back and face and some of the prisoners were taken to the hospital, one man having a finger amputated, according to two lawyers’ petition to the court.

“It appears to this court that the Detention Center, through its administrator, Scotty Bodiford, has not been kept clean in accordance with such standards applicable to detention centers and has therefore been subject to the said MRSA outbreak,” U.S. District Court Judge G. Ross Anderson Jr. said in his order granting the inspection.

According to the court order, the infectious agent of concern is MRSA, or methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, a type of staph resistant to antibiotics like penicillin and amoxicillin.

Need I say more? I don’t think so. Do finish reading the article though, very interesting stuff. I can feel this MRSA in prisions situation starting to come to a head.

First and foremost - I am not kin to Jim Dorriety who is supposed to be over the well-being of the inmates at the Greenvilel County Detention Center. The information regarding the Staph infections at the Greenville County Detention Center should not be “privaleged information.” I respect what Greenville County Councilman Tony Trout is doing regarding the jail and how is is asking questions. The public should be concerned and demanding answers as well. After reading this article - it is clear to me that Greenville Administrator, Kernell and Assistant County Administrator, Dorriety - have something to hide. As a life-long resident of Greenville County - I would like to see people in these positions that are trustworthy and give detailed answers to the questions they are asked. Councilman, Tony Trout, when first elected, made it a mission to get more money for the Greenville County Detention Center. That mission was accomplished. The problem is NOT that the jail is overcrowded - it’s that that we don’t have “competent” people in these high positions overseeing their responsibilities and answering for their negligence. Thumbs up to Mr. Trout and hopefully County Council (along with higher authority as Judges) can make sure this situation is corrected immediately.

I HAVE A SON IN THE RICHLAND COUNTY JAIL IN OLNEY, ILLINOIS THAT HAS STAFF INFECTION AS WE SPEAK. THEY DID NOT GET IN ANY HURRY TO HAVE HIS ARM LOOKED AT AND AFTER A COUNTY NURSE FINALLY TOOK A LOOK AT IT THEY HAVE DIAGNOSED IT AS STAFF. THE JAIL UP THERE NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO AS WHETHER IT IS BEING CLEANED PROPERLY

I talked to a former employee of Greenville County Jail and they had tried to get cultures of some of the patients with open sores and the results were always “lost” or they claimed were never sent. This was 2 years ago and it was a problem then.

I have a brother who is currently in the Greenville County Detention Center that just found out he has the staph infection also. He was gave some sleeping meds one night and the next morning over slept while the meds were giving out. He told the security guards there he missed his meds and they called the nurse she refused to bring his antibiotic to him on this particular day. So how are they gonna get rid of this infection if the prisoners are not getting the meds they need to protect them from it? Then these prisoners get out and spread it around the community. Before long it’s not gonna be just a jail problem it’s gonna be a community problem. So get off your butt’s clean up the jail and give these prisoners their meds before we all get infected. I’m also interested in this lawsuit against the Greenville County Detention Center if anyone knows who I need to contact please e-mail me. THANKS
