Staph infects 45 in Nashville, TN

September 20th, 2006 · 2 Comments

At least 45 students in Sumner, Rutherford and Franklin, TN counties have been diagnosed with Staphylococcal infections in the past couple of weeks - the Rutherford county students had MRSA, the antibiotic resistant bacteria.

All schools began a daily program of disinfection (with bleach) of the athletic facilities, bathrooms and cafeterias, and do not intend to close schools, siting that, “Even if we close down school two or three days to stop the spread, it will still be here next week.”

Nearly everyone carrys Staph on their skins - it is impossible to eradicate completely. It is much more useful to use good and constant hygiene practices to keep it under control, both on your bodies and on surroundings.

Hi Debbie - Staph bacteria is not supposed to be able to live in water, but with the way it is able to morph, nothing would really surprise me about it. It is such a common and prevalent bacteria though, it is not unlikely that it could just be a coincidence. Good luck to you and your son, I hope he is doing ok.
