Taking steps to fight antibiotic resistance

May 30th, 2006 · 2 Comments

One of the first, foremost and most important things that need to be done to begin the fight against MRSA and other antibiotic resistant bacteria is changing of long ingrained habits. Doctors who are still ready to write an antibiotic prescription to satisfy their patients rather than to take the time to educate as well as doctors who are just giving the old habitual doses of the old habitual drugs are two of the primary factors of the rise of antibiotic resistance. As much as we would like to think that all of our doctors are on top of things in the world and what is going on in their chosen fields even, sometimes they are not and you need to be empowered with knowledge enough to know for yourself what is right and what is wrong. And to remember that when your doctor recommends to you to let an ear or other infection run its course, and let your body try to fight it first - that this is a good thing, and is for your benefit. We often forget that our bodies are designed to fight without the use of manufactured antibiotics. We should use antibiotics only when absolutely necessary. The fight against antibiotic resistance not only begins with your doctor, but it begins with you as well.
