The USMC Reminds Us About Food Safety in the Summer

June 6th, 2006 · 4 Comments

According to the Navy Region Southwest (NRSW) Food Services Office, the time is here to watch out extra carefully for bacterial food illnesses such as salmonella and staphylococcus that occur due to improper food handling. Here are a few items that will hopefully jog your memory and remind you to be careful while barbecuing this summer:

  • Hand washing is the single most effective action in preventing the spread of disease causing bacteria
  • You should wash your hands thoroughly for 30 seconds before handling food and between jobs with hot and soapy water. The same is required if you use disposable towelettes
  • You should have a proper place to store towels and wastewater.
  • Plan the menu around safe food handling
  • Remember, perishable foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products and combination salads must be kept cold. Once foods are cooked, they should be kept hot (above 141 degrees F). If you are planning to purchase take-out foods, such as fried chicken or barbecued beef, eat them within two hours of pickup. Otherwise, buy cooked foods ahead of time to chill before packing them into the cooler
  • if cold foods like macaroni salad are left out for more than two hours or between 41-140 degrees, the food is no longer safe for human consumption and must be thrown away
  • Dining Services officials also said that fire is fire and there is no method safer than the other, but propane is more controlled than charcoal.

  • MRSA Notes » My Son, My Sun—A Mother’s Story of Tragedy in the Face of MRSA // Jul 5, 2006 at 12:28 am

[...] This is my best effort for the b5media’s Science and Health Channels June theme day, featuring “The Sun.” There just isn’t much to say to connect MRSA and the sun - and I really am not the most creative gal on the planet to be quite honest. I could talk about the sun and what it does to your food if you leave it out, but I already did that the other day. Ha ha. I could tell you about my skin cancer that occurred 2 months after Marshall left the hospital after his MRSA horror, but that just doesn’t have much to do with the subject at hand. So, I went on a hunt, and found this incredibly sad story about a mother, who holds a doctorate in Public Health, who lost her tiny baby boy to a horrific strain of MRSA. Read it, and weep, and know how important it is to know of the existance of this bacteria and to do what you can do to avoid it, and help with the problem in general by refusing to be part of the problem and refusing antibiotics unless they are very necessary. The longer I deal with MRSA the more I truly believe we should wipe out all use of antibiotics except in dire circumstances. Our bodies are meant to fight for us without antibiotics, antibiotics should only be used in worst case scenarios. I think. [...]
