In an effort to help prevent the spread of HA-MRSA in the UK, two of the hospitals with the worst infection rates have banned doctors from wearing neckties and superflous accessories, which have been shown to collect bacteria over the course of a days work.
But doctors say the new rules stem from political correctness rather than scientific evidence and fear that patients will have less confidence in casually dressed medics.
One consultant, who works for the trust but did not want to be named, told the Sunday Times: “If you come to see a consultant, you will be greeted by an open-neck-shirted doctor who will look as if he is the hospital DJ, but will in fact be the consultant.”
LOL That cracks me up - but indeed is a good move towards prevention the spread of infection. Political correctness? I think not. I am not sure, however, that the clothing and skin underneath these accessories are not going to be just as bacteria-laden, but at least they are easier to keep clean without all of the extra hiding places for bacteria.
I wonder why they haven’t tried fabric treated with silver for hospital/lab wear?
