Update on MRSA Pedicures

February 21st, 2006 · No Comments

The Dallas County Dep’t. of Health and Human Services is working on getting some new guidelines up quickly to help combat the infection problems in the pedicure baths of nail salons. They have also issued some guidelines for clients to be sure to follow. Those of us who are aware of MRSA are a step ahead of the game here, but for anyone who might not know the proper things to do/watch out for, start here:

1. Make sure the nail salon can demonstrate it is up to code.

2. Insist that technicians wash their hands before your care.

3. Make sure all towels, instruments and solutions are properly cleaned before using.

4. People who have chronic medical conditions that would predispose them to slow or difficult wound healing should not use common foot baths.

5. People who have wounds or ulcers near the sites of treatment should not use nail salons.

6. Report abuses or problems to the management as well as the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations.

Something I would definitely add to this list is for people with immunodeficient systems (the elderly, those with diabetes, HIV, malnutrition problems, recovering from serious illness) should avoid salon pedicures altogether. Seriously.

Of course, as a licensed nail tech myself, my best advice for just about anyone is to learn to do it yourself. As you may know, I have quite a few (my friends are calling me Blogzilla at this point) web sites that I work on every day, and one of them is one to teach you to do your own nails. Here is the pedicure category if you would like to learn to do them yourself - I highly suggest you do.
